Chapter 20: Awake Rating: PG-13
Theresa awoke slowly as she felt the hard hospital bed below her and instinctively grabbed her left arm where she felt an IV sticking into her skin. Her mind felt foggy but she was still vividly shaken by her dream. She knew Fox would never lay a hand on her in a violent way but she couldn’t figure out why she was in the hospital. She felt her eyelids rise and fall as she tried to focus her eyes but everything around her was slightly blurred. She felt the dull ache of her head and immediately flashed back to the last thing she remembered.
“Fox, please. You don’t understand.” Theresa pleaded.
“No, I understand. I understand completely.” Fox said furiously, “I understand that you are a lying, two-faced manipulator and I can’t believe I ever trusted you.”
Theresa felt the tears well up in her eyes as she heard the hatred behind Fox’s voice. She closed her eyes and tried to process what was about to happen but she couldn’t. Fox was going to open that curtain and all the months she had spent with him trying to get over Ethan were going to be a waste. She was going to be alone again and it was nobody’s fault but her own. Theresa opened her eyes and saw Fox still staring at her.
“Fox, please, don’t go back there.” Theresa said softly.
“It’s too late, Theresa,” Fox said turning away from her, “There’s no going back now,” he said reaching for the curtain.
“Fox, NO!” Theresa bellowed, but it was too late.
“Oh my God.” Fox practically whispered, as he stood awestruck and perfectly still with the curtain open in front of him.
But what had happened after that? Her mind was completely blank. She reached up and touched her head only to find it was bandaged, but she still couldn’t remember why. Just as she began to sit up the door to her room opened.
“Whoa! Theresa, lie back down,” Fox said putting down the bushel of flowers that he had brought her and rushing to her bedside, “Dr. Russell said you have to take it easy.”
“Fox…” Theresa said groggily as he fixed her pillow and helped her lay back down, “What happened? Why am I here? I can’t really remember anything.”
“Yeah, you hit your head pretty badly.” Fox stopped and stared at the floor with a guilty look on his face, “God, Theresa. I’m so sorry”
Theresa reached over and touched the hand he had sitting on her bed. She stroked along his fingers and he looked up at her with tears resting in the corners of his eyes.
“Why are you apologizing?” Theresa asked quietly.
“All of this is my fault.” Fox said, “I’m just---” he paused, “I’m just so sorry, Theresa.”
“You have to tell me what happened.” Theresa said calmly.
“What’s the last thing you remember?” Fox asked her, looking deeply into her eyes and looking completely terrified.
“Well,” Theresa said slowly, “I remember that we were fighting about Ethan and you were accusing me of certain things.”
Theresa stopped for a moment and looked at Fox in silence. Did he know? Had he found Ethan in the changing room? He couldn’t have. He wouldn’t be apologizing to her if he had. They had escaped being found out yet again, but Theresa couldn’t decide if that was a good thing or not at this point.
“I remember you calling me a manipulator, something about me being two-faced,” Theresa paused and looked at him, slightly hurt, “But the last thing I remember is you opening the changing curtain. Everything after that is just blank.”
“You fainted.” Fox said solemnly, “You fainted when I had my back turned and hit your head on the corner of the table. By the time I turned around you were bleeding and barely conscious. All you kept saying was “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry” before you passed out.”
“I am sorry.” Theresa said honestly.
“You shouldn’t be the one that’s sorry. I should be.” Fox said as he stood up and began pacing the room.
“Fox, this is your fault.”
“Yes it is!” Fox said frantically, “I don’t even know what came over me! I just---you told me Ethan had been there before and I jumped to conclusions and didn’t even try and listen to you. I don’t even know what I expected to see when I opened the curtain but I should have known you would never do anything like that to me. I’m sorry, Theresa.” “Don’t be sorry, Fox.” Theresa said quietly, “I know I have a past with Ethan and that is hard for you to forget, but you can’t let that leave a shadow hanging over our relationship. I love you very much, Nicholas Foxworth Crane and I’m sorry if I’ve done anything to make you doubt that.”
Fox walked over to the bed and sat on the edge of the bed and reached his hand down and stroked Theresa’s face. Theresa closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying her hardest to not feel guilty as she lied directly to Fox’s face. She felt tears well up in her eyes and opened them slowly and looked back at her.
“The things I said---” Fox began.
“I’ve been called worse.” Theresa laughed.
“I know, but I don’t know what I was thinking.” Fox said, “Please forgive me. I never want to hurt you again.”
“It’s just a bump on the head Fox, I’ll be fine.” Theresa said taking his hand in hers.
“Can you ever forgive me?” Fox said looking down at their hands as they intertwined.
“There is nothing to be forgiven as far as I’m concerned.” Theresa said with a smile.
“I love you so much Theresa, you have to know that.” Fox said as he leaned down and kissed her forehead.
“I know you do, and I love you too.” Theresa paused hesitantly, “You have to remember that, especially after what I am about to say.”
Theresa’s look suddenly turned serious as she sat up slightly in bed and took Fox’s face in her hands.
“What’s wrong Theresa?” Fox asked, “What do you have to say to me?”
Theresa looked deeply into his eyes before she took her hands away from his face and put them back in hr lap. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes before she began.
“The wedding is off” Theresa said plainly as she watched the look on Fox’s face and felt her heart breaking along with his.

Chapter 21: If he imagined hard enough Rating: PG
Ethan stood outside Theresa’s room with Jane in his arms and Little Ethan standing beside him. Had he just heard her correctly? Had Theresa just called off her wedding to Fox?
“Uncle Ethan?” Little Ethan asked, interrupting his thoughts, “Why aren’t we going inside?”
“Hold on a second, Sport,” Ethan said as he looked down at him, “It looks like your Mom is having an important conversation with Fox.”
“And we’re eavesdropping?” Little Ethan asked, raising one eyebrow just like Theresa did when she was being sassy. Looking down at him, Ethan saw so much of Theresa in him and it made his heart swell.
“We are not eavesdropping.” Ethan said quickly, then glancing inside the doorway he continued slowly, “We are just waiting for the opportune moment to go inside so we don’t disrupt them.”
“So, we’re only kinda eavesdropping?” Little Ethan asked jokingly.
“I guess you could look at it like that,” Ethan said ruffling his godson’s hair as Jane giggled in his arms. He turned and kissed her on the nose before his mind was distracted again by the voices coming from inside.
“Fox, I just don’t know anymore,” he heard Theresa say, “I feel like Ethan is this dark cloud hanging over our relationship and no matter what I do, I can’t convince you that he’s not a part of my life anymore.”
“Theresa, that’s not true.” Fox’s voice sounded almost desperate which made Ethan feel slightly guilty. He was the dark cloud hanging over their relationship, more so then Fox would ever know.
“You know that it’s true and what happened tonight just proves that.” Theresa continued, “You were so determined that Ethan was behind that curtain that you flew into a frenzy and I saw a side of you I had never seen before. It really scared me, Fox.”
“I know it did, and I’m sorry.” Fox apologized, “I was just so convinced he was there…” Ethan broke his gaze from the doorway and looked down the hall. Fox had been right, he had been there. If Fox had walked behind that curtain a few seconds before he had he would have seen him with his own two eyes. Luckily, Ethan managed to collect his clothes quietly as he heard Theresa and Fox kissing from the other side and scrambled out of a window in the Solarium just in the nick of time. He had walked around the outside of the grounds and into the living room to meet Phyllis who had Jane.
He and Theresa had done it again. They had escaped being caught again; they came out completely unscathed. Well, not completely. When Ethan returned to the mansion from the park with Jane he had been informed of Theresa being rushed to the hospital after she had fainted. As soon as he heard, he decided to take Jane and Little Ethan to go see her. If there was one thing Ethan knew that would help Theresa feel better, it was most definitely her children.
“But he wasn’t.”
Ethan’s thoughts were interrupted by Theresa’s voice which, despite the fact she was lying through her teeth, was calm and collected.
“I know that now,” Fox said pleadingly “Please, don’t call off the wedding.”
“I’m just don’t know---”Theresa began.
Almost unconsciously Ethan’s fist rose to the door and knocked, right at that moment. He stepped slightly into the doorway with Little Ethan so that he was visible to Fox and Theresa. He smiled at both of them, but received a look of worry back from Theresa and a scowl from Fox.
“I hope we’re not interrupting,” Ethan said as he walked slowly into the room, “But when I got back from the park with Jane, Phyllis told me you were in the hospital and I thought you’d want to see the kids.”
“Mom!” Little Ethan said as he ran up to the hospital bed and hopped up beside his mother and gave her a hug. “Are you okay?”
“Of course I’m okay, baby” Theresa said as she smoothed her son’s hair to the side “I just fainted and hit my head but Dr. Russell said I should be out of here in a few hours.”
“A few hours?” Ethan cut in from across the room.
Ethan saw Fox look up from the gaze he had on Theresa and Little Ethan and glance over at him.
“There were a few tests that Dr. Russell ran to see why Theresa might have fainted,” Fox answered.
“Yes,” Theresa said looking from Fox over to Ethan and then back to her son, “But after that I am free to go!”
“That’s good to hear,” Ethan said, looking down at Jane and smiling, “Isn’t it Janey?”
Jane nodded her head which caused everyone in the room to laugh in unison. Ethan approached Theresa’s bed with her in his arms and leaned down so that Theresa could kiss Jane on the forehead. Ethan paused for a moment as he looked down at Theresa, her head bandaged and her eyes still slightly droopy.
There he stood holding their daughter in his arms with his godson sitting right in front of him while his brother sat on the opposite side of her bed, alone and slightly heartbroken. If he imagined hard enough, he could see Fox disappear from the opposite side of the bed which left him alone with the family he had always wanted. He could see Theresa’s hand in his own and not in Fox’s and he could picture holding Theresa in his arms and kissing her until she felt no more pain.
But no matter how hard he imagined, he couldn’t wish Fox away. He was there in Theresa’s life in the same way Gwen was in his. No matter how much he wanted to believe that Fox was bad for Theresa, he knew for a fact that he wasn’t.
“Mom, I’m a little hungry,” Little Ethan said disrupting Ethan’s thoughts while he turned in the bed to face his mother, “Can I go get something from the cafeteria?”
“Alone?” Theresa said in disbelief, “I think not, Mister.”
“Fox?” Little Ethan asked, “Would you take me to the cafeteria?”
“Little Ethan maybe it would be better if---” Theresa began.
“I’ll take you.” Fox replied before Theresa could stop him.
“Are you sure?” Theresa said with disbelief as she turned to face him. “Of course,” Fox said standing up from her bedside, “It’s no trouble at all, little man.”
Little Ethan hugged his mother one more time before he walked across the bed and stood beside Fox. Ethan stared at both of them and saw how in just a short amount of time Little Ethan had started to become like Fox. They had the same relaxed stance and both stood with their left hand in their pants pocket. Ethan felt a stab of jealousy hit him directly in the gut and felt that stab intensify as Fox kissed Theresa before he walked out of the door with Little Ethan.
“Penny for your thoughts,” Ethan heard Theresa say. Ethan turned his head to face her and saw a smile creep onto her face. Ethan stared at her smile for a moment, trying to memorize what it looked like so that he could keep that image in his head forever.
“How are you feeling?” Ethan asked sitting Jane on the edge of Theresa’s hospital bed. He saw Theresa instinctively reach for Jane and bring her onto her lap.
“A little groggy,” Theresa answered, her gaze locked on Jane, “But mostly just guilty.”
“I know what you mean.” Ethan said solemnly.
“Ethan---” Theresa began.
“Theresa, wait, before you say anything there’s something I need to say.” Ethan said, not quite believing the words that were about to come out of his mouth.
“What is it, Ethan?” Theresa said as she reached out and took his hand in her own. Her hand was soft and delicate and as her fingers stroked his own he knew this was only going to get harder and harder if he didn’t say this as soon as possible.
“Theresa, I need you to do something for me.” Ethan said, taking his hand out of hers and walking across the room.
“Anything for you.” Theresa said softly.
There was a long pause as Ethan stared at the floor for a moment. He breathed in deeply and ran his hands through his hair. He held his eyes shut for as long as he could until he had to open them and look at her to make sure she was still there. His blue eyes met Theresa’s deep brown ones and he felt his words tighten up in his throat, making it increasingly difficult for him to swallow.
“Marry Fox.” Ethan said directly, “I need you to marry Fox.”

Chapter 22: A Silent Understanding Rating: PG-13
Ethan stood across the room, staring at the love of his life as he saw her trying to process what he had just said. He could barely believe he had said it, but he had; he needed to.
“What did you just say?” Theresa asked her gaze on him unflinching.
“You heard what I said, Theresa,” Ethan said turning away from her, “Don’t make me repeat it.”
“I’m sorry, but you’re going to have to.” Theresa said, her tone filled with disbelief.
“I overheard your conversation with Fox, Theresa” Ethan said turning to face her again, “I know that you called off the wedding because of me and I can’t let you do that.”
“Because of you?” Theresa asked.
“You said I was like a dark cloud hanging over your relationship and I realized that I am and I have no right to be,” Ethan paused, “Seeing as how I have a wife.”
“I know you have a wife, Ethan. You don’t have to remind me” Theresa said coldly, “But with all due respect weather or not I call of my wedding to Fox is none of your business and you had no right to eavesdrop on our conversation.”
“I wasn’t eavesdropping, I just overheard you two talking,” Ethan lied. He knew full well he had been eavesdropping, but he didn’t care, “Honestly Theresa, I know I was against your relationship before but I realized a few minutes ago that Fox loves you very much and you deserve to be happy with him. Marry him, Theresa. Marry Fox.”
Ethan watched as Theresa readjusted her body so she could rest a now sleeping Jane against her chest while she sat upright in her bed. He heard her scoff from across the room and knew deep down, he wasn’t going to like what he was about to hear.
“Where do you get off, Ethan?” Theresa asked angrily.
“What are you talking about?”
“Seriously, what is the matter with you?” she asked as Ethan heard the very apparent pain behind her voice.
“What do you mean?” Ethan asked.
“You spent months trying to convince me that Fox isn’t good for me and that I shouldn’t be with him. Then, after I finally make the conscious decision to call off the wedding because I realize that Fox deserves so much better than what I have been doing to him, you suddenly come to the conclusion that you feel so guilty about how you’ve been betraying him that you want to give me to him as some kind of prize?”
“That’s not what I meant---”Ethan began.
“That’s exactly what you meant Ethan!” Theresa interrupted, “You need me to marry Fox? What is that?” she asked him, “You think that me marrying him will absolve you of your guilty conscience? By “letting” me marry him, is that making you feel better, Ethan? Is it?”
“No, Theresa. That’s not why I want you to marry Fox.” Ethan said.
“Then why do you, Ethan?” Theresa asked, tears rising in her eyes, “Why this sudden change of heart?”
Ethan looked over at Theresa and watched her try not to let herself cry. She was being stubborn and determined; two of the qualities that Ethan loved the most about her. Ethan felt his heart tense up as he realized what he was doing. He was telling the one woman he loved the most in the world to marry another man. He was going to tell her to commit her body and her mind to another man because he knew it was the best for her; he knew he could never be that man and it killed him.
Why was he doing it? Because he knew he had to. If he didn’t tell her to marry Fox, she would call off the wedding and spend the rest of her life alone and pining for him and he couldn’t bear to watch that. He would rather see her try to have a life with Fox then watch in guilt as she lived out the rest of her life alone.
Sure, Fox would have her body and her mind but Ethan knew he would have her heart and her soul. Those were things she gave to him that he could never give back; they were a part of him just as much as they were a part of her.
Ethan inhaled deeply and walked over to Theresa’s bed. He held her head in his hands and brought his forehead over to touch hers. Without him even realizing it Ethan’s eyes had begin to fill with tears as he held onto her gently, careful not to break her.
“I…You…” Ethan stuttered, not sure what to say anymore, “You deserve to be happy, Theresa. Actually, you deserve all the happiness in the world and if I thought for a moment that I could give that to you, I would.”
“You can, Ethan.” Theresa said, her voice shaking, “If anyone can it’s you.”
“I wish that was true,” Ethan’s voice choked out, “But we are in an impossible situation.”
“I know.” Theresa said quietly.
“And with this impossible situation we’ve been given, we both have to make the best of it, okay?” Ethan said, pulling his face away slightly and smiling half-heartedly at her.
“But---” Theresa started.
“No buts, Theresa.” Ethan interrupted, “I love you too much to let you waste your life away on loving me.”
“That’s the problem,” Theresa said, looking down at Jane, “I would never see it as a waste.”
As the last word came out of her mouth, both Ethan and Theresa collapsed their heads into each other’s shoulders and let their tears flow freely. Ethan felt Jane’s small body pressed against his chest and shut his eyes tightly, trying to keep the resolve he had to be strong. Ethan inhaled the smell from Theresa’s neck and reluctantly pulled away from her.
“I love you, Theresa.” Ethan said staring right into her eyes, “But more importantly,” he paused, “I love you enough to let you go.”
They both sat in silence; the only sound in the air was Jane breathing softly in her sleep against Theresa’s chest. She slept soundly as both of her parents came to a silent understanding that they had to let each other go.
Their gaze was never broken even though both of their hearts were.
