Chapter 14: Alterations Rating: PG
“Theresa, can you zip me up?” Theresa heard Fancy ask from behind the changing curtain that the wedding planner had set up in the solarium which had basically become the wedding room. Theresa walked over to the dressing curtain, zipped Fancy up and went and sat back down.
“Okay, let me see!” Theresa said, watching as Fancy stepped out from behind the curtain in a floor length violet dress. It had an empire waist that was cinched with a lilac ribbon that was tied into a bow at the back with straps that sat just below her shoulders. “Oh my God, Fancy!” Theresa gasped “You look stunning!”
“Really?” Fancy asked, turning around and looking in the mirror as Theresa went up behind her and started ruffling the bottom of the dress.
“Honestly, Fancy, I couldn’t ask for a more beautiful maid-of-honour!” Theresa remarked as she spun Fancy around and hugged her tightly before pulling her away and looking her in the eye “Or should I say, sister-in-law?”
“I like the sound of both!” Fancy said, pulling her hair out of a bun and letting it fall to her shoulders “But what I really can’t decide is how I should wear my hair!”
“Join the club,” Theresa said looking into the mirror as she stood beside Fancy playing with her hair “I can’t decide if my hair looks better up or down with the dress and it’s going to drive me crazy until I can decide.”
“You already are crazy, Theresa,” Fancy said which caused both women to break out into a fit of giggles before they were interrupted by Phyllis.
“Excuse me, Ms. Lopez-Fitzgerald?” Phyllis broke in as she held Jane in her arms.
“Soon to be Mrs. Crane!” Fancy said excitedly with a smile across her face which caused Phyllis to let out a small chuckle before continuing.
“Neither of those names matter, Phyllis because I have told you several times to call me Theresa.” She said looking at Phyllis with sincerity.
“Alright Ms.—Theresa” Phyllis said with a slight blush creeping onto her cheeks, “Well, you told me to bring Jane down to you at 3 o’clock so here she is.” She said as she passed the young girl into Theresa’s arms.
“Thank you so much Phyllis!” Theresa beamed “I’ve missed my little girl so much.” She said as she looked down at Jane who was smiling and contently eating a chocolate chip cookie.
“It’s no problem, Miss.” Phyllis said as she went to leave the room, “Just call whenever you want me to take her back up to her room.” And with that she turned and left the three girls alone in the solarium.
Theresa held on to Jane and once again stood beside Fancy in the mirror and looked at all three of their reflections. Fancy tickled Jane on the cheek and Jane giggled.
“Why don’t we try Jane’s flower girl dress on her right now?” Fancy asked, stepping over to the rack that held all the bridesmaids dresses that had already been made and now just needed alterations.
“That’s a great idea, Fancy” Theresa exclaimed and looked down at Jane “How about is baby? You wanna look all pretty like Auntie Fancy?”
“Mama…. Cookie” Jane laughed as she continued to chew on the cookie in her hand before handing the rest of the drool covered treat to Theresa who laughed and put Jane down.
“Well, I see you are done with this!” Theresa said putting the soggy cookie in the garbage. She grabbed a nearby towel and wiped her hand off and then made her way over to Jane and wiped her face off as she giggled. Fancy made her way over to the two of them holding Jane’s dress and looked down at the two of them.
“Hey, Theresa, why don’t you go put your dress on while I put this on Jane?” she asked, glancing over to the closet which held Theresa dress. It got its own special closet with a lock so that Fox wouldn’t be tempted to sneak a peek before the wedding.
Theresa stared over at the closet and thought of the beautiful gown that was inside. It was white with off-the-shoulder straps and intricate beading on the bodice. The gown was gorgeous and made Theresa feel like a princess, but still, every time she put it on all she could feel was that there was something missing, and Theresa knew exactly what it was.
No matter how many alterations she made to the dress, she still wouldn’t be marrying the man she truly wanted to--- Ethan.
“That’s a great idea, Fance.” Theresa said, snapping back into reality. She left Jane with Fancy and made her way over to the closet and unlocked it. She grabbed the hanger that the dress was on and made her way behind the changing curtain and began changing as she listened to Fancy who was having some difficulty dressing Jane.
“Sit still young lady!” she heard Fancy joking with Jane who was apparently having a lot of fun making things difficult for her aunt. “Theresa, I’m gonna have to tell Fox to keep an eye out for this one when she gets older because I have a feeling she is going to be exactly like her mother!”
“And why is that a bad thing?” Theresa said laughing from behind the curtain.
“I’m not saying it’s a bad thing.” Fancy said as she struggled to zip up the back of Jane’s dress “All I’m saying is she is going to be a stubborn little handful!”
Jane laughed and ran over to the mirror as soon as Fancy let her zipper go. Fancy stood up and ran to her side and both of them stared into the floor length mirror when Fancy saw the dressing room curtain open.
Theresa stepped out and turned around and Fancy immediately zipped her up and spun her around.
“My God, Theresa.” Fancy exclaimed, “You look absolutely gorgeous.”
Theresa smiled back at Fancy and smoothed out the front of her dress. Fancy grabbed her hand and dragged her over to the mirror where all three stood wearing the dresses they would be wearing a month from now when Theresa and Fox would be married.
“Honestly, you don’t think the beading is too much?” Theresa said looking down and scrutinizing the beautiful gown she had on.
“It isn’t at all!” Fancy said examining the dress, “This dress is perfect for you Theresa.” She said smiling, “And it fits you like a glove!” she laughed.
“Yeah, it does now, about 30 alterations later!” Theresa said chuckling.
“Still, it’s as if this dress was made for you.” Fancy said.
“Well, then, maybe it was!” Theresa exclaimed, scooping Jane up into her arms and staring at her reflection in the mirror.
“Oh God,” Fancy groaned “Is this going to lead to another one of your lovely talks about fate, Theresa? Because if it is, I have to warn you that I have to leave in about 5 minutes so I’ll have to get the condensed version!”
They both laughed and Theresa shot her a fake angry stare. Fancy looked down at her watch and then looked over to Theresa.
“What’s wrong?” Theresa asked, putting Jane back down and holding onto her hand.
“Oh, it’s nothing important.” Fancy replied, “I’m just supposed to meet Luis at the Book Café in 10 minutes and you know how your brother is about people being late.”
“Why be late, when it’s just as easy to be on time?” both women recited using their best Luis impressions before they broke out into laughter.
“Okay, let me unzip you then so you can get going.” Theresa said reaching for the back of Fancy’s dress.
“Thanks, Theresa.” Fancy said before she disappeared behind the dressing curtain. Theresa watched her until the curtain shut behind her and then turned her attention to the mirror. She looked at Jane’s reflection and the smile on her daughter’s face and felt a grin escape across her own.
She gripped Jane’s hand and gazed into the mirror and couldn’t help but picture Little Ethan in his suit standing beside both of them, looking like a little gentleman. She smiled at the thought of both of her children and then couldn’t help but picture Ethan standing behind her with his hands on her waist, staring with her into the mirror at their family.
It was supposed to be the four of them, they were meant to be a family--- that is what fate had intended. So why was he married to another woman and why was she about to replace him in their family with Fox?
Theresa closed her eyes and pushed all of those thoughts to the back of her mind. She was going to marry Fox and they were going to have a beautiful family, even if it wasn’t going to be the same family she had always dreamt of. It was silent as Theresa held her eyes shut until she heard rough footsteps approaching from the hallway.
“There are my girls” Theresa heard from behind her and she inhaled sharply as turned around, knowing exactly who was there.
Ethan stood in the doorway of the solarium, smiling at Theresa and looking her up and down before directing his gaze towards Jane who also stood before him all dressed up.
Theresa stared back at him with the biggest smile on her face, but then before she could even form a sentence in her head they were interrupted by the voice of the person in the room that Ethan hadn’t had a chance to see.
“Ethan.” Fancy said, stepping out from behind the changing curtain and giving her brother a cold look which caused the smile on his face to drain away, “What the hell are you doing here?”

Chapter 15: The Theresa He Knew Rating: PG
Ethan stood silently staring at Fancy, realizing he probably looked like a deer caught in headlights. He had no idea Fancy had been behind the changing curtain and was pretty certain she had heard Ethan refer to both Theresa and Jane as his “girls”. Not able to think up any convincing excuse off the top of his head, Ethan stood in silence.
“Ethan?” Fancy demanded, “Did you not hear me? What are you doing here?”
Ethan looked to Theresa, to Jane, then back to Fancy and flashed her one of his most convincing smiles.
“What do you think I’m doing here, Fancy?” Ethan asked her raising one eyebrow, jokingly and he saw the look of shock on Fancy’s face before he continued “I’m here to see Jane.”
Ethan watched as Fancy let out a small sigh of relief, but kept watching and as he saw her begin to question his motives again but he cut her off before she could “Phyllis told me that she was down here with Theresa so I thought I’d come and take her off of her hands.”
“Oh,” Fancy said simply looking over at Theresa who had now picked up Jane and was holding her on her hip.
“Were you trying on your maid-of-honour dress?” Ethan asked desperately trying to change the subject while looking at the purple gown that hung in Fancy’s hands.
“Yes, I was,” Fancy said walking over to the rack and hanging her dress up “I’m glad Theresa picked violet because I’ve always looked good in purples.”
“You would have looked good in any colour I chose.” Theresa said reassuringly “But I’m glad I chose purple as well. It looks amazing with the flower arrangements Fox decided on.”
“That is does.” Fancy said, turning back and still giving Ethan a look of scrutiny. She walked over to Theresa and gave her a hug and gave Jane a kiss on the forehead.
“Tell Luis it’s my fault that you’re late Fancy.” Theresa said and she watched Fancy walk over to hug Ethan.
“Oh, don’t worry, I plan on it!” Fancy said laughing and leaning into Ethan who had his arms open ready for a hug.
“It was nice to see you, Fancy” Ethan said with his arms around her.
“You too Ethan,” Fancy said, slightly pulling away from him so she would be closer to his ear. “And just remember, they are Fox’s girls now” she whispered before she pulled back and looked at him sharply before letting him go and turning back to Theresa with a smile on her face.
“Call me later,” Theresa said waving at Fancy who had now made her way to the door.”
“I will,” she called back. Before she left, Fancy stopped at the door and turned around to look at Theresa one more time. “Oh, and Theresa?”
“Yeah Fancy?”
“You really do look amazing.” Fancy replied, “Fox is one lucky man.” she said, directing her last comment to Ethan before leaving the solarium and walking out of the mansion.
Theresa and Ethan both watched the door as Fancy left and kept their eyes glued on that spot, not able to look at each other yet. Ethan was the first to turn away. He slowly rolled his head around to face Theresa who still had her eyes fixed on the doorway where Fancy had just been.
Ethan slowly walked over to her, staring her up and down; looking at her wedding dress. The wedding she would be having to his brother. The dress his brother would be taking off on their wedding night. The wedding she should have been having to him, not his brother.
It was a beautiful dress, there was no doubt about that; but it wasn’t Theresa. It was perfectly beaded, flawlessly sewn and it fit her almost like a second skin. This wasn’t the dress for the Theresa he knew; this was a dress for the Theresa that Fox knew.
“What are you looking at Ethan?” Theresa asked as he got closer.
“You.” Ethan replied simply, looking deeply into her eyes and slowly rubbing Jane’s back as Theresa held her. Theresa shifted her weight and passed Jane to Ethan and started to walk away. “Where are you going?” Ethan asked as he watched her step behind the changing curtain.
“I am getting changed so that I can leave you with your daughter while I go to check on my son.” Theresa said simply, with something behind her voice that Ethan couldn’t quite decode.
“Are you okay?” Ethan asked, stepping closer to the curtain as he held onto Jane.
“I’m fine” Theresa said plainly “Why do you ask?”
“You seem upset.” Ethan said, looking towards the curtain.
“I’m not.” was the only reply Ethan received.
“Did I do something?” Ethan asked, still confused as to why he was getting the cold shoulder. He heard Theresa breathe a deep sigh from behind the curtain before he saw it be pushed open hastily and saw Theresa emerge, still in her wedding dress.
“Did you do something Ethan? That’s funny, it really is.” she said, slightly fuming.
“Theresa---” Ethan said, stepping forward and trying to place his hand on her waist. Theresa pulled back and looked him square in the eyes.
“Look, I get it Ethan, really I do.” Theresa began, “I’m not your wife, so you can go for days without calling me or talking to me because you think I will still be here waiting for you, even after you leave me hanging.” Theresa stopped and inhaled sharply “But Jane, she is your daughter. I understand if you don’t want to see me. That’s fine. You don’t have to take out any anger towards me on Jane. That’s just not fair.”
“Theresa, I---”
“No, Ethan, let me finish.” Theresa said, interrupting him firmly. “You know we can’t meet like we have been for much longer and I guess I’m the idiot who thought that our time together meant something to you but I was obviously wrong so…” her voice became quiet. “Now, if you could unzip me so I can leave you alone with Jane that would be much appreciated.”
Ethan watched Theresa’s eyes begin to well with tears and saw her trying with all her might to hold them back as she stared intently at the ground. He placed Jane on the ground and she ran over to the couch and grabbed her toy bear. He stepped towards Theresa and she immediately turned around for him to unzip her.
Ethan reached his arms forward and wrapped them around her, holding her in a tight embrace and resting his head against the side of hers as he felt her body release the sobs it had been holding in and felt her cry in his arms. Her body shook in his, but he held her together as her arms wrapped on top of his.
“Ethan…” she heard him whisper, “I don’t think I can do this.”
“Do what?” Ethan asked, gripping her a little tighter against his body. She was silent for a few moments and Ethan felt her take a few deep breaths before continuing.
“Marry Fox.” She choked out “I don’t think I can marry Fox.”
