*Sorry it took so long to update! Ethan was busy massaging me and I couldn't get away!*
Chapter 12: Anticipation Rating: PG
Ethan breathed heavily as he thought of the dream that just filled his head; the memory of their first secret reunion. He would never forget it, couldn’t forget it. It seemed like it happened yesterday when really, months had passed since that day. His body was covered in a cold sweat and the sheets around him were tangled around his legs and the pillows were all askew.
“Theresa,” Ethan muttered sleepily, his mind flashing back to their most recent encounter, the fact that he lost custody of his daughter to her, the reality that she would very soon be married to Fox and their meetings would end.
Soon, Ethan would be back to his routine life with Gwen and he wouldn’t get to see Theresa anymore. Wait, that wasn’t true. He would still see her…but he would see her with Fox.
He would see her in Fox’s arms, kissing Fox instead of him, starting her life with Fox instead of with him and the thought of that filled his mind with rage and his heart with regret.
Ethan looked across the dark room, got up and reached for his pants pocket and grabbed his cell phone. He opened it and stared down at the glowing numbers, wanting to call and just hear her voice even though he knew it was the middle of the night and she would probably be sleeping.
He stared down at the phone, darkness surrounding him, knowing he should be thinking about calling his wife and not Theresa. The problem was when given the choice Ethan would always choose to think of Theresa; even though he could never choose to spend his life with her.
He was a fool and he knew it, but still he stood with the phone in his hand and slowly began to dial.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Theresa inhaled slowly as she sat up in bed, sitting beside Fox as she dreamt of making love to his brother. It hadn’t just been a dream though; it had been a glimpse of their memories past. Guilt plagued her as she closed her eyes and tried not to think about all the pain it would cause Fox if he ever found out what she had been doing with Ethan.
She inched closer to the edge of the bed and let her feet dangle off the side. Staring down at the ring on her finger she thought of every wedding detail that had already been planned, every invitation that had already been sent; every lie that she told when she said she was happy.
Theresa knew that marrying Fox was what was best for her and the children, she knew that moving on with her life and leaving Ethan behind was what she needed to do but still her heart ached with longing and loneliness even though she was not alone in her bed.
“You have all of my heart and I’m afraid I will never get it back” she flashed back to her dream and clutched the place on her chest where her heart was supposed to be. It wasn’t there though. Her heart was not in her chest…it was in Ethan’s.
Theresa sat in the dark room looking at the pictures of her children on her bedside table. Jane and Little Ethan; his daughter and his namesake. She stared at both of them and all she could see was him; his eyes where Jane’s were supposed to be and his smile where Little Ethan’s stood. They were both his children despite what any DNA test would ever say and Ethan loved them both as if they were.
Theresa slowly crept off the bed and looked back at Fox who was still sound asleep. She grabbed her purse off her vanity and reached inside to find her cell phone. As soon as she found it, she silently walked out of her bedroom and down the hallway to the doors that lead to the balcony. Quietly she opened them and stood outside, leaning on the handrail and staring up at the moon.
She looked down at the phone in her hands and slowly opened it and dialed his number before placing it to her ear in anticipation to hear his voice, but she heard no ringing.
“Theresa?” she heard him whisper, and immediately felt her heart’s pace quicken.

Chapter 13: Unspoken Words Rating: PG
“He-hello?” Theresa choked out into the phone, knowing exactly who was on the other end. The phone hadn’t even begun to ring but still there he was, there was the voice she could never get out of her mind.
“Were you about to call me?” Ethan asked from the other end, “It’s awfully late” he teased.
“It’s just…” Theresa began and then paused “It’s embarrassing, nevermind.”
“You can tell me, I won’t laugh,” Ethan said reassuringly.
“No, don’t worry about it.” Theresa brushed off, “Wait, why were you calling me anyways?”
“You first,” Ethan insisted, chuckling.
“Fine.” Theresa gave in, “You win! I had a dream about you” she paused, “About us.”
She heard Ethan laugh on the other end of the phone and a smile immediately spread across her face.
“What happened to not laughing?” Theresa joked, looking up at the bright moon and all the stars that surrounded it.
“I wasn’t laughing at you,” Ethan explained, “I was laughing because well, I had a dream about you too,” Theresa felt her heart swell, “About us.”
“I see…” Theresa whispered, her eyes fixed on the stars that glowed in that darkness of the sky. It was just like their love; the bright shining star that made the blackness of the rest of her world seem bearable.
“Then, when I woke up I needed to hear your voice” Ethan said, staring his window and up and the same sky that was above Theresa, “And not just in my dreams.”
“Ethan..” Theresa began.
“I love you, Theresa,” Ethan declared, “And I need you to tell me you love me before I go crazy.”
“You know I can’t do that,” Theresa said, the struggle in her voice very apparent now.
“No, you can, you just won’t” Ethan argued.
“What difference does it make Ethan?” Theresa argued back, “You have a wife who’s bed you’re going to return to as soon as you hang up this phone and I have a fiancée who very shortly will be my husband until death do us part.” Theresa paused, “So what does it matter if I love you or not?”
“It matters because knowing you love me is the only thing that keeps me sane!” Ethan said desperately. “Will you be coming to see Jane tomorrow?” Theresa asked quickly, changing the subject because she knew no good would come of it.
“Theresa… you’re avoiding the question.” Ethan pointed out.
“---because you know, she misses you already.” Theresa continued, ignoring Ethan’s last comment.
“She misses me or you miss me?” Ethan asked roguishly.
“Both” Theresa said simply before she could stop herself.
Silence hung in the air as both of them searched for the right words to say, the problems was, there were no right words. None of this was right and they both knew it which was why they both couldn’t seem to be able to end the silence.
“Where are you right now?” Ethan asked breaking the quiet.
“Standing on the balcony,” Theresa answered.
“Staring up at the moon?” Ethan questioned as he looked outside his own window and stared at the large white mass in the sky.
“Yes.” Theresa said simply. “It really is beautiful tonight.”
“You’re beautiful every night” Ethan said gently.
Theresa sighed and closed her eyes, imagining Ethan’s arms around her body, holding her close and taking away the slight chill she felt from the wind.
“Come to see Jane tomorrow” Theresa insisted.
“I’ll see if I can make time.” Ethan said, silently trying to figure out why Theresa was being so secretive and mysterious with him.
“Make time?” Theresa scoffed “Shouldn’t you always find time for your daughter?”
“I can and I do,” Ethan stated, “But tomorrow I am fairly busy so I’m not sure if I will be able to make it or not. I don’t want to commit to something if I can’t follow through.”
“Yeah,” Theresa sighed apprehensively, “We both know how you are about commitment.”
As soon as the words came out of her mouth, Theresa wished she had kept them inside. Ethan always prided himself on his morals and she knew she was the one person in the world that made him question them.
“I’m sorry Ethan,” she said quietly “That was uncalled for and I really don’t want to fight with you. Not tonight, especially not after todays court hearing. You and Gwen must be upset. ”
“I don’t want to talk about Gwen” Ethan said simply.
“That’s something we can always seem to agree on,” Theresa said lightly, hearing Ethan let out a small chuckle on the other end.
“You’re right about that,” Ethan said with a laugh still in his voice, “God Theresa. This is so wrong.” the laugh immediately drained and was replaced by bewilderment.
“What is?” Theresa asked.
“All of this!” Ethan practically shouted in frustration, “Me, joking with you about my wife. Us on the phone in the middle of the night when we both belong to other people.” Ethan paused, “Me trying to get you to tell me you love me. It’s so wrong.”
“Ethan, look---” Theresa began but was cut off by Ethan who apparently had something he needed to get off his chest.
“You know what I dreamt of tonight Theresa? Do you know what it was?” Ethan asked.
“You said you had a dream about us so I can only assume…” Theresa trailed off.
“Yes, you’re right, of course you’re right. I dreamt of making love to you.” Ethan confessed, “But it wasn’t just that. I dream of making love to you almost every night but tonight, tonight was different.”
“What do you mean it was different?” Theresa asked, puzzled.
“I dreamt of our first night together.” Ethan said solemnly.
“The night on the beach?” Theresa asked.
“No, the first night of….” Ethan paused “This.”
“Oh my god.” Theresa gasped, coming to the realization that not only did they share their hearts with each other but they shared their dreams as well, “You didn’t Ethan, are you sure?”
“Sure? Of course I’m sure, Theresa.” Ethan said, “It was the night after I met you at the Bluenote, after I had taken custody of Jane.”
“You told me you still loved me--”
“—and then followed you to our Bed and Breakfast” Ethan finished her sentence.
“Our.” Theresa muttered quietly.
“Yes, that was what I dreamed of tonight. The night after I lose custody of my daughter and I dream of the night I took her away from you.” Ethan spoke quietly, feeling pains of regret in his voice.
“Ethan,” Theresa comforted, “I still want you to be a part of Jane’s life. You are her father and you love her and I never want her to forget that.”
“She won’t forget that I love her.” Ethan promised, “But I can’t make that same guarantee to you.”
“Ethan---” Theresa began.
“No Theresa, you need to hear this,” Ethan said forcefully, “Do you know why I had this dream tonight? Do you?”
“No” Theresa replied simply.
“I dreamt of that night, Theresa, because it was the last time you told me that you loved me. I tell you I love you every time we are together and you can never say it back to me.” Ethan’s voice was pained, “But I still can’t forget it. I know you love me even though you don’t say it but there is this huge part of me that is afraid you won’t remember I love you if I don’t say it.”
“I know that you love me, Ethan.” Theresa said, “If there’s one thing in life I know, it’s that.”
“You’ll forget, Theresa.” Ethan said coldly, “You’ll marry Fox, you’ll stop meeting me and you’ll forget. Our love is too important to be forgotten, but that is exactly what you’ll do.” He sighed, “You’ll forget it.”
“I could never forget it, Ethan.” Theresa said, choking back tears, “Even if I wanted to.”
“Do you want to?” Ethan asked.
“Sometimes I think I do...” Theresa began and she heard Ethan sigh on the other end, “But then I am reminded how deep our bond is and I realize our love is too strong to not be cherished.”
“What reminds you?” Ethan asked, still staring out the window, picturing Theresa standing on her balcony with the gentle wind blowing against her skin. He heard her breathe in gently and exhale deeply and thought of her chest rising and falling in the moonlight.
“Little things,” Theresa began. “Sometimes when Jane smiles, I look in her eyes and I see you staring back at me and that reminds me.” Theresa continued, “Sometimes, when I’m down on the beach I feel the sand between my toes and it reminds me of the night before we almost got married, the night you made love to me for the first time and I truly knew what it felt like to be complete…” she paused “And that reminds me.”
“Theresa---”
“Or tonight,” she continued “Tonight is a perfect example of how deep our connection is.”
“How so?” Ethan asked, puzzled.
“You don’t think it’s funny that you and I both had the same urge to call each other at the same time in the middle of the night? If that’s not a connection, I don’t know what is. It’s fate.” Theresa said effortlessly.
“How did I know you were going to say fate?” Ethan laughed.
“Because you know it’s true.” Theresa chuckled back.
“I wouldn’t go that far,” Ethan said, “But I will say it was quite the coincidence.”
“Well then Mr. Winthrop,” Theresa joked, “How do you explain us sharing the same dream? Would you say that was a coincidence as well?”
“The same dream?” Ethan questioned, “What are you talking about?”
“Tonight.” Theresa said, “When you told me tonight you dreamt about the first night at our Bed and Breakfast I was so shocked because I had the same dream.”
Both were hushed as the full realization of what they shared and it overtook them in a huge wave of emotion and lament. They listened to each other’s breaths as they both stared into the night’s sky and imagined they were right beside each other.
“It’s late,” Ethan said after a long while of just listening to Theresa’s breathing, knowing that he had to be at the office early if he wanted to go see Jane tomorrow.
“Yes, it is.” Theresa responded quietly.
“Thank you for letting me be at Jane’s party tonight,” Ethan said, “It was nice to be around your family for a while, pretend I was a part of it even if it was just for a few hours.”
“You could have been a real part of it if you made different choices, Ethan” Theresa said, letting tears fall quietly from her eyes, and hearing Ethan get frustrated on the other end, “But that’s neither here nor there.”
“I should be getting back to sleep, Theresa.” Ethan muttered.
“Me too, lots to do tomorrow,” she said flippantly, “Final wedding plans and things like that.”
Those words were like a knife through Ethan’s heart. Theresa was planning a wedding; she was going to be a wife. And not his.
“Well, I’ll let you get your beauty sleep then,” Ethan said, “Not that you need it.”
Ethan heard Theresa laugh on the other end and wanted desperately not to hang up.
“You are quite the charmer, Mr. Winthrop.” Theresa giggled, “Now you better get to bed. I wouldn’t want you Mr. Big Hot-shot lawyer to be yawning at work tomorrow because he was up to late” she paused, “Having over-active dreams.”
Ethan laughed and slowly walked away from the window and lay on the bed.
“Good-night Theresa,” he whispered, laying his head down on the pillow.
“Good-night Ethan,” she said back, wrapping her one arm around herself to keep warm and just as she was about to hang up she stopped, “Wait! Ethan?”
“Yes Theresa?”
“Our little secret right?” she asked.
“Our little secret.” he responded with a small smile on his face, “I love you Theresa,” he said, pulling the phone away from his hear and starting to close it, but stopping just as he heard a sound from the other end.
“I love you too, Ethan.” Theresa said, hanging up the phone and creeping back inside.
As they both lay wide awake in separate beds, with smiles on their mouths and stars in their eyes neither one of them could stop thinking about each other or their love.
Little did they know that the love that made them both so happy would also be the love that would eventually break both of their hearts.
