Chapter 9: One More Month
Ethan smiled to himself as he approached the door to the B&B, the image of Theresa, Little Ethan and Jane burning in his head.
“Day or Night” he saw Theresa whispering in his mind. He had no idea what she was up to, but he was sure he’d like it. He shook his head as he placed his hand on the doorknob to his and Gwen’s room and got ready to face his wife, still trying to get the image of the woman he loved out of his mind. He opened the door and saw that she was already in bed, which was bizarre considering how early it was.
“Gwen?” Ethan asked, wondering if she was asleep already as he slipped off his jacket and walked over to the bed.
“How was the party?” Gwen asked Ethan coldly, not bothering to turn around and face him. Ethan sighed and prepared himself for the inevitable.
“I know you’re upset with me--” Ethan began.
“I’m not upset with you, Ethan.” Gwen said, defeated. “I’m upset that I lost my daughter. I don’t give a damn about you right now, actually.”
“Gwen, you didn’t lose Jane.”
“Didn’t I Ethan?” Gwen said, finally sitting up in bed and staring at him angrily. “Because right now instead of laying here in her crib, in her home, near me her mother, she’s at the mansion with that bitch.”
“Gwen, you will still be there for her, you know that!” Ethan argued. “You are her step-mother and always will be a part of her life no matter where she is.”
Silence hung in the air and Ethan could feel the anger building inside of Gwen from across the room.
“What did you just say to me?” Gwen said with such disdain in her voice Ethan almost flinched.
“What are you talking about?” Ethan asked, puzzled as to what he said wrong.
“You heard me Ethan! How dare you call me her step-mother!” Gwen screamed “I am her mother Ethan and I don’t care what any piece of paper says!”
“Gwen, calm down, you’ll wake the neighbors” Ethan said calmly, walking towards the bed.
“I don’t give a damn about the neighbors Ethan! I lost my daughter because that whore Theresa who has everyone fooled with her “Little Miss Innocent” act! I am sick to death of it Ethan.” Gwen was still yelling, but Ethan didn’t have the patience to try and stop her.
“Gwen, Theresa is Jane’s mother and she deserves to be as much a part of her life as you do.” Ethan said, as the look in Gwen’s eyes turned ice cold. He watched her turn away from him.
“Get out.” She said simply.
“What?” Ethan said, slowly approaching her.
“I said get the hell out, Ethan!” Gwen spat at him.
“Gwen I’m not going. I know you’re upset but--” he watched Gwen turn back around and stare him down.
“Ethan, you need to leave right now.” Gwen said, her demeanor suddenly calm. “Before I say something I will regret in the morning.” She turned away again “I will see you tomorrow when I will be calm enough to talk to you, but until then I need you to get out and leave me alone.”
Ethan was in no mood to argue so he turned, grabbed his jacket and headed to the door. He paused before he left and looked back at his wife.
The woman he made vows to The woman he married. The woman he had to spend the rest of his life with.
“I’ll be at the Seascape. I have my cell if you need to reach me.” Ethan said, knowing she probably wasn’t even listening to him at this point.
“I’m sure I won’t.” Gwen said blankly. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” Ethan opened the door and stepped out; shaken by how angry Gwen was at losing to Theresa.
He knew this fight had very little to do with Jane and was mostly about losing to Theresa. He tried to suppress this thought even though he knew it was true. Ever since they had met Theresa, Gwen had been in constant competition with her and he knew it wouldn’t end until the day one of them was dead.
This is going to be a long “’Til Death Do Us Part” Ethan thought to himself as he left the B&B and climbed into his car.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Theresa lay in Fox’s arms in the middle of the night; her eyes wide open. She couldn’t sleep which wasn’t unusual for her. Ever since she and Ethan began seeing each other unless Theresa fell asleep in his arms she barely got any sleep at all. This had been the greatest day she had in so long, yet still; she lay awake trying to stop envisioning him, Jane, Little Ethan and herself as a family. She had to live with the plain and simple fact which was that dream was dead. She and Ethan would never be a family with the children, but she and Fox could be and she had to accept that.
She closed her eyes and sighed deeply, resting comfortably in her fiancées arms and thinking about their impending wedding. Just one more month until she married Fox; until she did the right thing and moved on with her life.
“One more month” she thought to herself “One more month with Ethan and then I have to end this game we’re playing with each other.”
Theresa opened her eyes thinking of her conversation with Ethan earlier that night and the plans she had in store for him now that she had custody of Jane. She thought about the next month and how everything was going to be so perfect, right before it all was going to get ripped away. He was going to be in for one surprise after another.
She told Ethan once she married Fox their meetings would have to end, but until that fateful day she was going to make sure she could immerse herself in as much of his love as she could.
With one last thought of the man who wasn’t the one in her bed, Theresa shut her eyes and imagined it was his arms around her and slipped into a heavy sleep, dreaming of the one man who would always own her heart.

*Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad you're all enjoying!* Chapter 10: The First Night Rating: PG-13
Across town, Ethan stirred in the strange bed in which he had fallen asleep in after many attempts to put his fight with Gwen behind him. He tossed around in a deep sleep, haunted by memories past.
Ethan saw Theresa run out of the Bluenote and couldn’t comprehend why. He had told her he loved her still, he told her that he knew it was her the night Jane was conceived; he told her everything he thought she had wanted to hear but still she was furious with him. He understood her anger; after all, he had just taken her daughter away from her.
Knowing he shouldn’t Ethan couldn’t help himself and followed after her. She walked quickly with her long hair flowing down her back. She walked and she walked and she walked until finally he saw her give up and lean against the wall of a small, quaint Bed and Breakfast right near Castleton. He saw her bury her head in her hands, wipe away her tears and then walk inside and do what he could only assume was book a room. He peeked through the window and before he could stop himself, he walked through the door and followed her up the stairs. He stopped dead in his tracks when he heard the clerk call to him.
“Sir, may I ask where you’re going?”
Ethan paused, knowing he had to come up with a convincing excuse.
“My wife just got a room here, I believe” he lied “I was just following her up to see where the room was before I went to bring our bags up”
The clerk nodded and smiled at him, and Ethan continued up the stairs. It was a small place, so when he heard a door quietly click shut he knew it was Theresa’s. He walked over to the door and placed his forehead against it, knowing he should turn around and go home to his real wife. When he heard the quiet sobs coming from inside, Ethan reached for the handle and slowly opened the door.
Theresa looked up with tears in her eyes, shocked at who was standing before her.
“What are you doing here?” she demanded, cutting him off at the door way.
“I needed to talk to you.” Ethan said, trying to get past her and into the room.
“Haven’t you said enough for an entire lifetime Ethan?” Theresa said, pain and confusion very apparent in her voice.
“I never meant to hurt you, Theresa” he said, reaching for her face and resting it in his hands, “I love you so much and I can’t bear to see you in pain.”
“It’s funny, for a person who claims he never wanted to hurt me, you’re the one who has caused me the most suffering” Theresa said, backing away from him and reaching for the door. “Now please leave and get away from me.”
Ethan walked to the door and shut it, causing Theresa to walk across the room to avoid him.
“Get away from you?” Ethan laughed, “I would love to. I would love to be able to get away from you but no matter how hard I try I can’t! Don’t you see my life would be so much easier if I could?” his voice was loud and perplexing “I know I should live the rest of my life with Gwen by my side and without you constantly in my mind and in my heart but I just, I can’t.”
“Can’t or won’t?” Theresa asked, softly.
“That’s the problem, I don’t know the difference. We both know I’ve tried to not think of you.” He said, “We both know that it’s this constant struggle I have with myself and it only hurts everyone involved.”
“It doesn’t hurt you the way it hurts me, Ethan.” Theresa said coldly, “Because if your decisions hurt you the way they hurt me you wouldn’t keep choosing her over me time and time again.” Theresa paused, wiping away a tear that had somehow managed to escape. “Now please, I don’t know why you came here, but leave. I need to be alone. Go back to Gwen and leave me to be with Fox, isn’t that what you wanted?”
“No, I’m not going anywhere.” Ethan said, walking close to her.
“Ethan, leave!” Theresa almost shouted. “You made it very clear at the Bluenote that despite how much you love me, you will never leave Gwen. How can you say that to me and expect me to want to be near you?” Theresa paused, and stared down at her hands, “Please, I don’t want to hear another word you have to say!”
“No,” Ethan stated simply, “You’re going to listen to this because I have to live with these choices everyday of my life; they haunt me everywhere I go.”
“That’s the point Ethan; you are the one who makes those choices! Excuse me if I don’t have any sympathy for you!” Theresa said backing away and glaring at him.
Ethan felt his heart break silently, pain ripping through his chest as he stared back at the one person he loved most in the world; the one person he had hurt more then anyone else. He watched her eyes inspecting his reaction and looked back at her with every ounce of love he had ever felt hoping that someway, somehow, she would feel it. He felt his heartbeat quicken and his breath shorten as he saw Theresa’s chest begin to rise and fall to the same rhythm as his.
She was a part of him; the biggest piece. When she hurt so did he; when she cried it was his tears; when he broke her heart, it was his own that he felt fracturing. They were one, each halves of a whole. Without her his world was black and empty and he knew without him she was a shell of herself.
Before either one of them knew what was happening Ethan took Theresa into his arms and held her against his chest, feeling her warm tears melt into his shirt and onto his skin. He felt her body slowly tremble in his arms and he gripped her even closer, wrapping his arms all the way around her tiny frame.
Theresa pulled her face away from his chest and looked up at him, the tears in her eyes shining in the moonlight. He watched the intensity in her face as she took slow, deep breaths and gazed intently into his eyes.
Her stare began pushing him closer and closer to the edge of the cliff where the noble man he always tried to be stood; contemplating weather or not to jump.
And that’s when Ethan felt himself slowly begin to fall.

Chapter 11: Our Little Secret Rating: R
Theresa tossed in bed as dreams flowed through her head; her body unable to stay still.
She felt his arms around her and looked into his eyes, watching as the man he had tried so hard and sacrificed so much to be slowly diminished away. She stood on her tip toes and draped her arms around his neck, pulling his face so close to hers their breaths became one. Theresa closed her eyes and waited for him to pull away from her, he always did. He would remember his wedding vows, the prison of a marriage that he was trapped in and he would push her away because of his sick sense of nobility.
Theresa waited, waited for him to draw back; waited for the last piece of her heart to twist and break like it had so many times before.
But it didn’t, he didn’t.
Her heart stayed in place as she felt Ethan lower his head and start kissing her neck, sighing softly between each kiss he placed.
“Ethan—” Theresa began, but stopped when she felt Ethan pull back and hold her face in his hands.
“Theresa, I love you so much and I don’t want you to hurt anymore.” Ethan whispered, gently stroking her cheek with his thumb. “You have all of my heart and I’m afraid I will never get it back.”
“And you have mine, Ethan, you always have” she whispered back, “But that doesn’t change anything and you’ve told me that over and over again.”
“What if it could?”
Theresa paused and silence fell in the air. She could tell by his tone what he meant, what he wanted. She stared back at him wanting so desperately to kiss him and say yes to his offer, wanting to be in his arms and his bed more then anything in the world. She saw something in his eyes she had never seen before--- something daring and bold, ready to take what he wanted; who he wanted.
“Ethan, we would never be content only having part of each other,” Theresa said, as her heart screamed at her to shut up and just give in to his advances.
“Theresa, having only part of you is better then having all of anyone else in this world,” Ethan declared, the truth pouring out of his soul. He leaned in close to her and gently brushed his lips against hers, sending a shiver up her spine.
“You have all of me Ethan, you always have,” Theresa spoke softly, “But you also have marriage vows that you spoke to another woman and I know you won’t ever forget that.”
“You’re right, I won’t,” Ethan sighed and watched as Theresa’s face fell with the same disappointment that he always managed to cause her. “But I made a vow to my heart as well Theresa, and I can’t deny that anymore.”
“A vow to your heart, Ethan?” Theresa asked, confused “Since when do you care about what’s really in your heart?”
“Since I realized that if when I don’t I’m not just hurting myself and my heart, but I am slowly shattering yours.”
Ethan was silent as he took both of Theresa’s hands into his own and slowly stroked them, watching as she inhaled slowly and carefully, not wanting to be hurt by him again.
“I have already shattered all your dreams Theresa,” Ethan breathed, “I can’t bear to break your heart anymore.”
“Then don’t.” Theresa whimpered, barely able to keep herself standing.
She felt herself collapse into Ethan’s arms as he hastily picked her up and carried her over to the bed. She tangled her fingers in hair on the back of his neck and pulled his mouth deeper; her desire for him growing with every parting of his lips.
He placed her back gently onto the bed, his hands running up the back of her shirt and slowly slipping it over her head. Their lips tore away from each other’s for only a moment before their overwhelming craving was too much to bear and their mouths crashed against each other’s once again.
Theresa ran her hands up Ethan’s chest and quickly unbuttoned the only thing that as keeping her skin from being bare against his. She watched as he tossed his shirt aside and then slowly lowered his torso onto hers, his smooth skin brushing against hers and causing her to arch her back in anticipation. She bit her lower lip as he ran his lips across her stomach, slowly getting lower until he had reached her skirt and began removing it with his teeth. Theresa slid her one leg up the other and kicked her skirt away then leaned up and began unbuckling Ethan’s belt.
Their lips met again, swollen with longing. Soon they had shed their second skin and could feel each others bodies, warm and sultry against one another’s; their skin lacing together as if they had become one person.
Ethan began a soft rhythm and Theresa’s body responded and moved along with his, matching his every stir with one of her own as both of them breathed heavily into each other’s mouths. As they began to move faster, Theresa let out small moans into her lover’s mouth as she ran her fingers up his chest and urged him on.
Ethan grunted melodically as the pace began to quicken, he could feel Theresa’s body tighten in anticipation around him and beckon him further.
“Yes, Ethan…” Theresa whimpered, breathlessly as he accelerated even more, forcing them both closer to the brink, thrusting more rapidly with each breath.
“Our little secret,” Ethan whispered into Theresa’s ear continuing their motion.
“What?” Theresa asked, gasping for air as she felt herself falling deeper and deeper into him.
“Our…little…secret,” He said louder, bringing his mouth down on her own again and feeling her bite his lower lip and run her tongue along the outside of his lips.
“What…did you…say?” Theresa breathed, labored, trying to keep up with Ethan who now rapidly crashed his body against hers, ready to finish what he had started.
“Oh…Theresa!” Ethan cried out in one last breath, feeling the release he knew they both needed and gently letting his body collapse on top of her. Theresa held him in her arms as he quivered against her body. “I love you,” he murmured into her skin, gently kissing it. Theresa grabbed his face and brought it up to hers, smiling at him with her eyes half closed in satisfaction.
“I love you too,” Theresa smiled, “My little secret” she said, kissing him and falling into his arms where she stayed all night, knowing that the morning held so many questions and so few answers, but she didn’t care.
This was their night, their first night. It was a sin and they both knew it, but Theresa also knew that once they had their first taste of this, neither one of them would be able to go back.
Theresa and Ethan both shot up in bed at the same time their chests rising and falling as they inhaled so desperately; an entire town full of people between them.
