Chapter 6: The Life I Could Have Lead
Ethan clung on to Jane as he approached the door to the Crane Mansion, hearing the laughter of the entire Lopez-Fitzgerald family ringing through the air from miles away. He heard the joy in all their voices; the sound of a real family. A real family was all he had ever wanted yet all he could ever do was deny himself that.
He paused outside the door, listening to the world he wasn’t a part of. He heard Luis and Miguel making fun of Theresa’s clumsiness; Pilar telling Little Ethan to get Jane’s favourite stuffed animal for when she got there; Kay and Fancy talking about how lucky they are to be a part of this family. He wanted to knock, but he didn’t want to disrupt them so he stood in silence staring at the door that opened the life he could have lead.
“Uhh, Ethan?” he heard from behind him.
Ethan spun around to see Noah and Paloma standing behind him, arm in arm carrying a bouquet of flowers and a bundle of balloons.
“Why are you standing outside the door?” Noah asked. Ethan was at a loss for words and he saw Paloma eying him carefully.
“Jane, my beautiful little girl” Paloma said letting go of Noah and reaching to take her from Ethan “Why don’t we go inside and see the rest of the family?” Ethan placed Jane gently in Paloma’s arms “Is that okay Ethan?”
Ethan nodded and watched as Paloma opened the door and heard the amazing greeting Jane got. The door closed behind them, slightly muffling the excitement and Ethan turned to look at Noah.
“Are you okay Ethan?” Noah asked, carefully examining his expression as he asked.
“Yeah, I’m fine Noah” Ethan responded half-heartedly.
“Is this about losing custody of Jane?” Ethan shook his head. “Is it about Gwen?” Ethan shook his head again. “I should have known” Noah sighed “Let me guess then, this is about Theresa isn’t it?” Noah asked, already knowing the answer.
“Look, it’s nothing Noah” Ethan said, as he looked away from his brother. He felt his eyes burning a hole through the back of his head and he knew Noah wouldn’t stop until he got an answer “Fine. Okay, you win. It’s about Theresa.”
“Why do you even try to hide it Ethan? Everyone knows how you feel about Theresa so I really don’t understand why you do this to the two of you.”
“Noah, it’s complicated.” Ethan said sternly “I look inside and see what I’m missing out on and sometimes, yeah, it gets to me, I won’t lie to you.” Ethan paused, and then continued. “It’s not always just about how you feel though; sometimes you need to accept what life gives you and deal with it. You have to take responsibility for you choices and live with them, despite what you really want.” Ethan looked through the window at everyone rejoicing inside. Noah caught the longing look in his eyes.
“Yeah, you really seem like you’ve accepted it.” Noah said sarcastically, but before Ethan could respond Noah ushered him to the door and swung it open, and the two brothers joined the party that had already begun without them.

Chapter 7: The Reunion Rating: PG-13
“Mommy! Can I hold Jane?” Little Ethan asked anxiously as he sat beside his mother on the couch in the living room as the rest of the family was standing around them “I am her big brother after all!”
Theresa smiled down at her son and gently lifted Jane up and looked her in the eye “How about it Janey? Do you want to sit with your big brother for a little while?” Theresa asked as she scrunched up her nose and made a silly face at Jane. Jane giggled and Theresa looked at Little Ethan “I think that means yes Little Ethan! Now sit back against the couch and put your arms on your lap”.
Little Ethan did as his mother said and Theresa gently placed Jane in his arms. Then she put a pillow under the arm Little Ethan had Jane’s head in and sat back and looked at her two children in amazement.
“I think she’s pretty, just like you Mommy” Little Ethan said smiling down at Jane.
Theresa laughed and turned as she felt Fox squeeze on the couch beside her and she grabbed his hand and held it in hers.
“Little Ethan, has Fox been teaching you how to be a charmer or what?” Theresa smiled.
“Hey!” Fox interjected “I hardly had to do anything, I assure you! That boy has a strong natural charm, just like his mother” Fox smiled and leaned in and kissed Theresa as everyone around whistled and hollered. Ethan reached for a nearby glass and started pouring a drink.
“Still gets to you doesn’t it?” Ethan heard a distinct voice from behind him and turned to see his sister Fancy staring him down.
“Well, hello to you too Fancy” Ethan said, continuing to pour and ignoring her last comment.
“How are you holding up, Ethan?” Fancy asked, her voice quickly turning from judgmental to sympathetic which surprised Ethan.
“I’m fine, Fancy.” Ethan said harshly “Yes, I lost custody of my daughter but I’m fine. Theresa deserves to be a bigger part of her life then I’ve allowed” Ethan said as he turned around, watching Fox with Theresa and the children, laughing like a family which almost made him sick. “So I guess this is just karmic retribution.”
“Which part?” Fancy asked following his gaze, “Theresa getting Jane back or her finally getting over you with Fox?”
Ethan clenched his jaw and looked over at his sister angrily.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about Fancy” Ethan said, gulping back his drink hastily.
“Don’t I?” Fancy said standing between him and his gaze that he had stuck on Theresa, Fox and the children. “You love Theresa right Ethan? Everyone knows it.”
“Why does everybody keep saying that?” Ethan asked rolling his eyes in frustration.
“Because obviously it’s true” Fancy stated. “You love her, yet refused to be with her time and time again so now she’s with Fox and it’s driving you crazy.” Ethan squirmed at Fancy’s accuracy “It kills you how right I am doesn’t it?”
“Fancy, you have no business butting into my life” Ethan said, turning to pour another drink “So please, keep your comments to yourself because I really don’t need another person on my case about Theresa.” I already get enough of that from my wife Ethan thought.
“Ethan, I wasn’t coming to you to protect your best interest, I was coming to you to protect Theresa’s.” Fancy paused and Ethan looked back at her. “Ever since Whitney and Chad moved to L.A. Theresa and I have become close friends as you know and lately I have been the one that has been there for her, not you” she said strongly. “Now I am saying this as her friend, not as your sister--- get over yourself.”
“Fancy!” Ethan shouted, shocked at her audacity.
“Ethan, you know I love you but this has to stop. You need to stop looking at Theresa the way you should be looking at your wife, the wife who you chose over Theresa time and time again. You need to let her marry Fox and have the life with him she always dreamt of having with you; a life that you rejected every time you were given the choice. You chose to be noble instead of following your heart so now you need to stick to that nobility and let Theresa go.”
“Fancy, I love my wife.” Ethan began the same tired speech “I once had feelings for Theresa but our time together has come and gone. Both of us are committed to other people and I don’t know why you would think I want anything more then to be friends with her.”
“I’m going to make both of our lives easier and pretend I believe you” Fancy said bluntly “But I really do hope you two can be friends” Fancy said as her and Ethan both looked over at Jane who was now back in Theresa’s arms on the couch “Jane deserves that much.”
“She deserves the world” Ethan said, unsure of weather or not he was referring to Theresa or Jane.
“You’re right Ethan” Fancy said, beginning to walk away, “And Fox can give her that.”
“Fancy--” Ethan began, but it was too late, she had walked over to Luis who was now taking his turn to hold Jane as the rest of the family looked on. Ethan turned back around and poured himself another glass, lost in his own thoughts.
Why was it he couldn’t get Theresa out of his mind? He knew that he should stop meeting her for their trysts but he couldn’t bring himself to end it. He knew she deserved at least a decent shot to make her relationship work with Fox, and yet he couldn’t allow that. He had to insinuate himself into their relationship by keeping up this affair and he knew it wasn’t right.
None of it was right, but he could never seem to remember that whenever she had her arms wrapped around him or whenever her supple lips were pressed against his body or whenever she was slowly running her tongue along his…
“Ethan?”
Ethan shook his head, his thoughts interrupted by the same soft, familiar voice that haunted his dreams. He turned around and sure enough, there she was, standing before him practically glowing. Her children had this effect on her but he’d never really noticed it as strongly until this very moment.
“T-Theresa” Ethan choked out, still staring at her thinking things he knew he shouldn’t be thinking.
And there they stood, each looking intently at the other with the same fire and passion that every encounter between them contained. Their love, it was like bottled lightning; dangerous and volatile; explosive and all consuming---a moment that comes and goes before anyone even knows what happened. It was a force so strong that neither one of them could contain it; no matter how hard they would try.
Neither could look away, so they stood in silence as the room around them continued to exist and so did they. The difference was they existed in a world only they knew about.
A world only they would ever know about.

Chapter 8: Everything is Taken Care Of
Neither one had any idea how long they had been standing and staring at each other, lost in another life, when they were abruptly interrupted after they heard several balloons pop across the room and saw Miguel collapsed in the corner with a dumbfounded look on his face. The whole room erupted in laughter as Kay helped Miguel to his feet.
“I thought Theresa was supposed to be the clumsy one?” Kay asked, giggling as Miguel took her hand.
“I guess she’s rubbed off on me” Miguel smiled at Theresa who was still standing across the room with Ethan, avoiding his stares while everyone was looking at her. As the room returned back to normal, Theresa turned back to him.
“Are you enjoying yourself?” Theresa asked him, trying to be casual and calm which was hard considering all that kept running though her head was the image of him taking her by the shoulders and pulling her into one of his deep, hot kisses that he reserved especially for her.
“I’m enjoying looking at you” Ethan whispered in a husky voice that made the hair on the back of Theresa’s neck raise up in anticipation. She breathed in heavily, hoping he would take that as a clue to change the subject which he did. “Yes I am, Theresa.” He replied, taking another swig of his drink.
“I’m glad.” Theresa said, fiddling with the empty glass in her hand.
“Let me.” Ethan said, taking her glass and filling it with punch before returning it to her hand, brushing it lightly with his own. Theresa felt the brief touch of his skin against hers and it sent shockwaves through her body.
“Thank you.” Theresa said, taking a sip and looking up at Ethan with a coy glance that quickly changed to a more serious look. “We need to talk about Jane.”
“I know you have custody now, Theresa. I was in court, I heard the judge.”
“I know you were there, Ethan. I didn’t mean it like that.” Theresa glanced around the room to make sure everyone was still involved with their own conversations before she began. “What I mean is I want you to make sure you visit her as often as possible” she paused and slightly lowered her voice, “Night or day.”
Ethan picked up on Theresa’s subtle hint and squinted his eyes in disbelief.
“At the mansion?” he asked, unsure of what exactly Theresa was saying. He saw a small smile form at the corners of her mouth and was so intrigued he could barely stand it.
“Yes, at the mansion, Ethan.” Theresa laughed “I already told Fox that you have developed a habit of reading to Jane in the middle of the night to try and help increase her talking skills early on--”
“Talking won’t be her problem with you as her mother.” Ethan joked as Theresa ignored his last comment and continued.
“And he said he had no problems with having you in the mansion at any hour.” Theresa raised her eyebrows suggestively as she put emphasis on the last part of her sentence. “I told him to alert security of your late night arrivals so they won’t hassle you. Or anyone else for that matter.” she whispered.
Ethan felt his chest become tighter with longing. He glanced around the room and saw Fox looking at Theresa who was now playing along and smiling back at him, her fiancée. Ethan smiled at him as well, playing the part of the loyal half-brother so well it actually made him want to laugh.
“What about--” Ethan began.
“Just know that if you choose to come, everything is taken care of.” Theresa smiled timidly as she began to walk away. “It was nice to see you, Ethan.”
It’s always nice to see you Ethan thought, but simply replied “You too” and walked over to the crowd, joining in with the festivities instead of shying away from them like before. He couldn’t help but feel sorry for Fox as he watched him with Theresa and her children.
Sure, Fox got the family that Ethan had always wanted, but he didn’t have Theresa and Ethan knew that. No matter how hard Fox tried he would never replace him in her heart, and after Theresa just reassured him of that Ethan knew now, more then ever, that her wedding to Fox couldn’t happen; he wouldn’t let it.
He couldn’t let her make the same mistake he had.
