Seems like she's gets all the bad luck., doesn't she?
Well, maybe it will get better...
Chapter Nine: Pilar's Last Rites/The Uninvited Guest
Father Lonigan arrives and enters Pilar's ICU room. The family prays once again for some kind of miracle, but it doesn't look like they're going to get one.
"Father in Heaven, you saved Pilar four years ago she had that rare blood disorder. Can't you spare this life again? Don't take her away from the people who love her. Pilar is one of your children -- she has never done anyone wrong. Please I beseech you..."
Father Lonigan's eyes filled with tears. Suddenly, Martin, Pilar's ex-husband, entered the room. Martin also burst into tears when he saw his ex-wife lying in that bed near death's door.
Martin thought to himself: Is this what I get for all the h*ll I put her through all those years ago? I loved her so much, and now she's dying!
Sam and Luis saw Martin standing in the doorway and told him to leave, that he had no business being there whatsoever.
"What are you doing here?" Luis asked.
"I...heard about Pilar over the scanner in my SUV. I had to come check on her. It breaks my heart seeing her in this condition," he replied.
"Papi, you can go. There are plenty of people here to see Mama through this," Paloma stated. Go back to your b!tch!
"You're not wanted here," Sam hissed. "Now get out!"
"You mustn't argue. It isn't good for Pilar," noted Father Lonigan.
Pilar then flatlines.
"See what you've done," yelled Theresa.
"It's too late. We've already lost her!" Eve said as she pounded her fist on the table. "D@mnit!"
"Pilar, mi amor, please come back to me," Sam said holding her hand. "Don't leave us."
Eve and another doctor try to revive her.
"Come on, Pilar! You have a lot to live for. Don't give up. Sam loves you -- your children and grandchildren love you."
They finally get her back.
"Thank you, God!"
"Martin, you need to go. If Pilar comes to and sees you it could be bad."
"Ok, Dr. Russell. I'm sorry I caused such an uproar," he apologized.
In the hallway...
"How is she?" Katherine asked.
"We lost her for a minute, but she is stable for the time being," Martin answered. "I shouldn't have gone in there, but I had to see her. I had to know if she was all right."
"Now that you know she is, can we please go?" Katherine asked.
"Yes...And Katherine?"
"What, darling?" She asked.
"Thank you for being so understanding when I told you I wanted to see Pilar in the hospital. No matter what, she will always be a part of my life via our five children."
"I know that," she replied.
"And I'm happy for her and Sam. I just hope God spares her."
The next morning, Dr. Miller arrives at the hospital. He examines Pilar and has grave news for her family. He meets them in the ICU waiting room.
"She doesn't have much time to live," he said.
"This cannot be happening," Miguel replied.
"I think you all need to be prepared for the worst," Dr. Miller stated. "I know you all don't want to think about that, but sometimes you just have to."
"D@mnit!"
"Pilar was thrown against that tree pretty hard. She has some very serious head trauma. And from what I've seen of all of these test results, she's only getting worse."
"What will I ever do without Pilar?" Sam questioned.
"I want a second opinion," informed Luis.
"We are the best, Luis, you know that. And so is Dr. Miller."
"She's right," said Kay. "Your mom is in the best care possible."
"Dr. Russell, Dr. Miller, you do everything in your power to save our stepmother," ordered Noah.
"We will. You have my word," promised Eve.
"I have a question," said Sam.
"What's that?" Eve asked.
"If Pilar wakes up, could she have amnesia?"
"It's a good possibility."
