Gwen laughed as Jane splashed her little fists in the water, relishing these little chores that Theresa had tried to steal from her. ‘Stop” Gwen thought to herself ‘If all I do is concentrate on what has been taken away from me then I should just give Jane back to Ethan.’ Jane solidified Gwen’s resolve when she said “Mommy.” “Oh princess, mommy loves you so much.” She scooped Jane out of the tub, swaddled her in a towel, and headed for the little bedroom. Gwen had gotten lucky and the B&B had a suite available. Walking through the sitting room made Gwen blush, the small table with candles lit gave a premonition of the romantic evening ahead. “Oh Jane, your mommy is so silly, getting all flustered over Jared.” Even mentioning his name gave her a small thrill, a kind of thrill she thought long dead. Before too long there was a knock at the door and Gwen opened it to a huge bouquet of flowers, “Jared, just how many roses are you holding?” her smile grew with each flower she counted, Ethan had never done anything like this for her. “Only about three dozen, I dropped the rest of them in the elevator, and then there was that cute little grin again. Gwen was certain everyone in the B&B could here her heart beat, “And how did you know that pink is my favorite color?” “Give me some credit, unlike your ex-husband I have paid attention to you over the years and only a fool would not notice how much pink you wear. Plus these roses remind me of how your cheeks look when you’re blushing,” saying that got Jared the desired effect and Gwen’s cheeks almost matched the flowers in his hand. As they sat down to dinner Gwen had the strangest feeling that her peace was about to be disturbed. Before Jared could even fill her wine glass that was a sharp knock at the door followed by Rebecca plunging into the room, “Gwennie have you heard…oh I see you have company. How are you tonight Jeffrey?” “Mother, his name is Jared and what are you doing here?” Gwen loved her mother but she was on a date and didn’t need Rebecca’s drama to ruin the evening. “Oh Gwennie I had to come over as soon as I heard. The Taco Queen has been arrested for murder and Ivy said she’d call the governor and push for the death penalty. Do you have any champagne so we can celebrate, my flask just doesn’t seem appropriate for this kind of happiness. Plus, I emptied it on the way over.” Gwen and Jared looked at each other quizzically before Gwen asked her mother “Who did Theresa kill?” “She killed Chad, it’s all over the news.” As if to prove her point Rebecca flipped on the tv. A large picture of Theresa in handcuffs filled the screen and the newscaster’s voice boomed through the speakers, “Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald, former wife of Alistair Crane, has been taken into police custody following the murder of Chad Harris-Crane, son of Alistair Crane. Sources close to the Crane family are speculating that this murder had something to do with Ms. Lopez-Fitzgerald being stripped of all money and power that came to her upon the death of her husband. The police have a witness, a Whitney Russell, but are allowing no interviews at this time. Please stay with channel…” Gwen turned off the television and was shocked. “See honey, Tacocita is going to prison for the rest of her frijoles eating life.” Rebecca did a small jig as she opened the champagne, showering herself in the frothy bubbles, “No more Theresa, no more Theresa” she sang happily. “Maybe we can call Ivy and all go over to the Blue Note for a few dozen more bottles of celebration.” “Mother, I don’t know if you noticed or not, but I’m in the middle of a date here and Jared and I would like to finish our dinner before it gets cold.” Rebecca turned to look at her daughter, “I’m not stopping you from eating Gwennie, if it tastes good I’ll have some too.” “No mother, you won’t,” Gwen grabbed her mother’s arm and started walking her towards the door, “I’m sure that Ivy and Julian will be more than happy to drink themselves into a stupor with you tonight, but I’m busy. Tomorrow you can come over and you and me and Jane will have lunch and do some shopping. Jane is sleeping so you don’t have to say goodbye to her,” and then quieter so that Jared wouldn’t overhear, “I really like this guy and it would be great if you could say a pleasant goodbye to him, and his name is Jared.” “Goodnight Jeremy, be nice to my Gwennie or I’ll send you back to Theresa.” Rebecca left laughing and almost floating on air. “Is your mom always so…friendly?” Jared asked with that little smile back on his face, “And should she really be if she has memory problems?” Gwen wanted to run and hide, but decided to answer first, “She doesn’t have a memory problem she just wants to irritate you a little. And as for being friendly, well my mother has considered destroying Theresa her pet project and tonight may be the greatest night of her life. Oh my god, Theresa killed Chad! What was she thinking, is she out of her mind!” Jared sighed, Theresa was never going to really be out of his life, “Lets hope that either she didn’t do this or she had a very good reason.” Jared didn’t want to say it out loud, but this murder might just get Theresa the psychological help she had needed since her marriage to Alistair. “Do you want to help her?” Gwen started laughing, “Are you joking? I may be trying to forgive Theresa, but I’m not about to go running to her defense. Plus I’m sure this will send Ethan running right back to her,” Gwen was shocked by the bitterness that crept into that statement. Would helping Theresa be the right thing to do? No, but perhaps she might be able to help in time. “Jared, I hate to be the selfish type, but tonight is our first date, and Jane will be waking up in about an hour so if we want to eat our desserts we better hurry.” In truth Gwen wasn’t worried about Jane, if the little girl woke up she had already order a chocolate sundae that was currently chilling in the little freezer. In truth she didn’t want Theresa to once again invade her peace; Gwen had already shared too many moments of her life with that girl that she wasn’t willing to sacrifice what might be happening between her and Jared. Tomorrow she’d talk to Whitney to determine if Theresa even needed help, tomorrow…

Theresa sat in her cell and cried, why hadn’t Ethan come to get her yet? She’d used her phone call to call Ethan telling herself that he was a lawyer that could help her. In truth she just wanted someone to hold her and say that everything would be all right. Pilar had come and seen her daughter, tearfully explaining that they didn’t have enough money to get Theresa out of jail. “But his is silly mama,” Theresa had exclaimed, “Just call Ethan, he has enough money to get me out and he came help with my case.”
Pilar continued to cry and shake her head, “I’ve called him many times mija, and he refuses to even see you. He did say that you probably won’t go to prison, that what you did was in defense of Whitney. He said you will most likely end up with years of probation or the district attorney could decide not to even pursue the case. All is not lost Terracita, soon you will be able to come home.”
“I’m sorry mama but I can’t see anything good about coming home, I have nothing there.”
“Theresa, you’re family is there…”
“No, mama,” Theresa almost yelled, cutting her mother off, “My children aren’t there and neither is Ethan, so I have nothing there that I need.” Pilar was once again shocked by her daughter and almost shook with anger as she spoke to her insolent daughter, “Theresa I realize that you have lost a lot, but this constant anger is not helping you. I find it difficult to believe that you are the daughter I gave birth to. You have lost everything but you have learned nothing. Jane is not your daughter and Ethan does not want to even speak to you. He is gone mija and you must move on with your life. In time you may be able to regain custody of LE and it would be nice if you could accept him with pure love in your heart and not anger.” Pilar got up and left a very confused Theresa behind her.
Theresa was no longer confused by her mother’s words, she was furious about them. If her mother wasn’t going to help her, Theresa decided to help herself. “Sam,” She started yelling and in less than five minutes he came over to her cell. “What do you want Theresa, I have other things to do than talk to you.” Theresa was stung by his words but quickly remembered her purpose, “I was hoping I could make a quick call on your cell phone,” At his doubtful look she added, “I tried to call Ethan for legal counsel, but he wouldn’t talk to me. I just wanted to get a lawyer who could help me.” Sam didn’t say another word but handed her his phone. As he walked away from her cell Theresa tried desperately to remember Jared’s number. ‘Life is funny,’ she thought, ‘I was married to the man and almost had his baby but I can’t remember his phone number.’ She finally got the correct number and waited for him to pick up. ‘He may have divorced me, but he loves me too much not to help me. Besides he is the only other lawyer I know.’
“Hello,” Theresa almost fainted with relief that someone was willing to take her call.
“Jared, its Theresa and I need your help.” She heard Jared’s sigh and wanted to cry for every person she had hurt. “Please Jared, I’ve been arrested for murder.”
“I know Tess, Rebecca told us earlier,” Just then Theresa heard some shuffling in the background and the phone went dead. That small action made Theresa question whether there was anybody left on her side. Whitney was in shock and had collapsed into a coma-like state, unable to help her best friend; even Theresa’s siblings wouldn’t talk to her. Luis had been the one to arrest her, and except for reading her rights hadn’t said another word to her.
“Gwen, that was Theresa and she sounded like she really needed help.” For a horrible moment Gwen forgot where she was and reacted like she was talking to Ethan, “Its always about her isn’t it? You’re always going to put her before me aren’t you?”
“I’m sorry Gwen, I didn’t know she still bothered you that much. Maybe I should go,” Jared got up from the couch and started towards the door. “Jared please don’t leave. I didn’t mean to snap at you, it’s a habit that I need to break,” seeing his reluctance she quickly added, “If you want we can go down to the jail and see if we can do anything. Just let me get Jane dressed, can we drop her off with Ethan on the way?”
“Of course we can.” His smile convinced Gwen that she was doing the right thing. ‘I just hope mother never finds out.’ Gwen called Ethan and arranged for him to watch Jane while her and Jared “went dancing at the Blue Note.” She felt bad about lying to Ethan, again, but he hated Theresa even more than she did and would certainly have talked her out of going to help the girl. “Alright Jared, lets go help Theresa,” inside Gwen wanted to die. This was way worse than having to eat her mother’s cooking, this was worse than eating Grace’s tomato soup cake, this was…helping Theresa.

Gwen stared at the visiting room and wanted to throw up. Even though Jared had said helping Theresa was the right thing to do, Gwen still had her doubts. ‘Maybe the world really will be better off without her on it.’ The thought was driven out of her mind as Theresa was led in. The girl looked horrible, her hair and clothes were filthy and disheveled and there was an odd look in her eyes. “Gwen what are you doing here, did you just come to laugh at me? Sam told me that Jared was here to see me, not you.” Theresa said the last word with such malice that Gwen almost left, ‘Ten deep breaths, ten deep breaths,’ Gwen repeated the mantra until her anger was gone.
“Theresa I’m actually here to help you so the sooner you shut up the faster this will go.” Theresa stopped talking, but Gwen was still tempted to slap that little pout off her face.
“Is Ethan coming down to help me too? He is the best lawyer in the world and it would take him about five minutes to clear this little misunderstanding up,” Gwen was shocked, had Theresa finally lost her mind? No, this was probably just Theresa’s version of hope.
“Theresa he knows that you’re down here, but he isn’t coming to help you. Jared got a call from another client but he should be back in any second,” Gwen was praying he would come back in any second. Sitting and talking to Theresa in jail was not the ending she had foreseen for her date. Her and Jared should be sitting in front of the fireplace in her suite sipping champagne and talking about their childhoods. “What exactly happened Theresa, why did you kill Chad?”
Gwen’s question caused Theresa to burst into tears, “I didn’t kill him on purpose I swear. I just wanted to talk to Whitney…” Theresa’s sobbing made it impossible for Gwen to make out any of her words. “Theresa if you don’t calm down I’m going to leave and I’m going to take Jared with me.”
“Why are you being so mean to me, I’m the victim here…” Her next words were cut off as Jared came and sat down beside Gwen. He looked at his ex-wife with a combination of pity and disgust. She looked so young right now that he had to remind himself that she had just committed murder. “I want you to know Theresa that I have not agreed to represent you as a lawyer, but after I hear what you have to say I may or may not reconsider, so you better start talking.”
Theresa stared at the people in front of her wondering why she would accept help fro her two biggest enemies. “I don’t even know why you guys are here, I’m sure there are others that are willing to help me. Besides once Whitney wakes up from her coma thing everyone will realize that this was self defense.” Theresa sounded so sure of herself that Gwen couldn’t help the words that came pouring out of her mouth. “No one is coming to help you Theresa. Whitney isn’t in a coma, Eve just said that to make you feel better. Whitney is working with the prosecution and her parents fully support her decision. Ethan is going to help you because he hates you. Your family isn’t going to help because you’ve practically been disowned. Pilar is the only one who still talks to you and she can’t afford a lawyer. The Bennetts won’t help you because of what you did to Ethan. And finally, no one from Crane will be helping you because Julian has threatened to terminate anyone for even talking to you. It looks like you should stop being a b*tch and start being appreciative that anyone will help you.”
“Shut up Gwen, I don’t have to listen to your lies. Whitney would never turn against me, and it was an accident. I didn’t murder anyone, Chad was threatening Whitney and I stabbed him before he could hit her.” Jared couldn’t help but ask, “Had he hit her yet?”
“Well no, but he was going to.” Gwen rolled her eyes, typical Theresa to believe everything she did was justifiable. Jared stood up, “Well good luck Theresa, maybe I’ll come to your trial. Are you coming Gwen?”
“No please don’t leave…I need your help. Sam and Luis won’t talk to me and Ethan hasn’t taken any of my calls. Do you really think I could get sent to prison?” Jared shook his head, “Prison maybe, the death penalty most likely. You killed a man Theresa, have you even thought about that or were you too busy feeling sorry for yourself?” Theresa started to say something but Jared cut her off, “I’ll represent you Theresa, but I have one condition, that you go and see a psychiatrist. You need professional help and if I have to blackmail you into getting it I will.”
“Are you getting me out of here, this place smells funny.”
“No Theresa,” Jared sighed, “There won’t be a bail hearing until Monday morning, so you better play nice with your cellmates for the next two days. Come on Gwen lets get going, we still have dessert to eat. Theresa I’ll see you on Monday at the bail hearing. Directly after that we’ll be going to see a psychiatrist of my choice.” With that statement he grabbed Gwen’s hand and left the room.
Monday morning dawned bright and early, too early for Rebecca, but she wasn’t about to let her hangover destroy the beauty of the day. She dressed with care in her favorite leopard-print suit and dug another tube of red lipstick out of a drawer, ‘They need to make these tubes last longer, I swear that I go through a tube a week. If only red didn’t look so good on me.’ Rebecca giggled in the mirror, extremely pleased with her reflection. Today was going to be one of the best days of her life, bright orange looked horrible on the chalupa. Rebecca started to giggle again. For years Theresa had been the bane of her and Gwennie’s existence and after years of trying to get rid of the annoying girl, Theresa had done herself in. after filling her flask Rebecca walked out to her waiting car, ready for the excitement of Tacocita’s bail hearing.

The bail hearing had gone badly, very badly. The judge knew enough of Theresa’s past that her numerous outbursts hadn’t surprised him but it had been enough for bail to be set sky high. Gwen could afford to get Theresa out of jail, but Jared knew better than to ask her. Pilar was the only person there to support Theresa, and strangely enough she seemed relieved that her daughter wasn’t coming home. Jared was shocked by the smile on his client’s face, “Theresa, you do realize that you are being charged with murder don’t you?” Theresa resisted the urge to roll her eyes, “Duh Jared, I’m not . I’m just excited to get home. After I get a decent shower I’ll go over and see Whitney, remind her that she’s my best friend. Then everything will be back to normal and Ethan will come back to me.” ‘Good god,” Jared thought, ‘Theresa has completely lost her mind.’ Thank goodness he was getting her some professional help or else Theresa might never some back to them. “Jared are you ready to go, Mrs. Henderson has a doctor’s appointment in about an hour so I need to get Jane.” Theresa’s eyes got an odd gleam when Jane was mentioned. “Can I see Jane when you guys get me out of here?” Gwen’s evil side got the better of her and she laughed, “Theresa you aren’t going anywhere. Your family can’t afford the bail and I’m not about to take responsibility for your freedom.” Gwen heard a cackle from the back of the room and wanted to melt into the floor. Walking to the last row she could barely contain her anger. “Mother what are you and Ivy doing here?” “As if we’d miss the best trial of the century, OJ look out because he comes Theresa. By the way Gwennie, why are you helping the taco queen? Getting rid of her has become one of my favorite hobbies.” Rebecca’s pout made Gwen forget any anger she had at her mother and actually made her want to hug the older woman. “Yes Gwen, why are you and Jared helping hurricane Theresa? I’d think the two of you would be celebrating her downfall. Rebecca give me your flask so that we can have a toast.” “You want to know why I’m helping her after everything she’s done to me? I’m helping her because of you two.” At their confused look Gwen continued, “I don’t want to end up like either one of you: bitter, alone, drunk, and devoting my life to misery. My daughter is not going to learn how to hate from me. If this means I have to help Theresa, so be it. After all, I’ve been doing charity work for the less fortunate for years, one more won’t hurt.” Gwen walked back to Jared, barely listening to Rebecca and Ivy’s complaints. “We aren’t bitter or alone.” “That’s right Rebecca, we have each other…and any man we want too,” Ivy quickly added at Rebecca’s hurt look. “Don’t listen to your daughter, she’s lucky to have us. Obviously she’s spending too much time with Theresa, it’s warped her brain.” “Come on Jared, Jane and I would like to have brunch with you.” The court officer was walking towards them and Gwen couldn’t help adding, “Now Theresa, make sure you play nice with the other inmates.” Theresa’s comments were cut off by the officer leading her out of court. Jared walked up to Gwen and wrapped her in a hug. “Did someone mention brunch with my two favorite ladies? I’d be a fool to pass that up, lets go.” Gwen actually felt warmer just hearing Jared’s words, and she had to ask herself once again, could this be love? And if it was love, was it worth it?
