Humming along with the music, Gwen looked at herself in the rear view mirror and smiled. As much as she hated to go back to Harmony, the thought of her daughter kept her going. She was going to be reunited with her daughter. Jane was really hers, there had been a mistake with the original DNA test and now everyone knew that Jane was Gwen’s daughter. From what Rebecca had told Gwen, Theresa was taking it very badly, even going so far as to accuse Ethan of doing this on purpose to punish Theresa for her secret. The truth about LE’s paternity was still a shock to everyone in Harmony, and to Ethan especially. The last time Gwen had talked to him he had sounded horrible, but she had convinced him to put down the vodka bottle and become the parent LE should have. After discovering that LE was his son, Ethan had demanded that Eve run another DNA test on Jane. Gwen never thought that she’d ever be grateful to Ethan for anything, but he was giving her daughter back to her.
Gwen was so lost in her own thoughts that she reached Harmony before she knew it. She decided to go straight to the Crane mansion and pick up Jane, and then she’d go check into a hotel. In less than half an hour she’d be cuddling her sweet baby. It was these thoughts that kept Gwen from seeing the black SUV that cut in front of her Mercedes. She jerked the wheel and heard the tires squeal and then she didn’t hear anything.

Theresa was scared, as scared as she had ever been. All she wanted to do was scare Gwen, not kill her. Gwen had to understand that Jane was Theresa’s daughter no matter what the DNA test said, and fate wanted her and Ethan to be a family with their son and their little girl. Ethan wasn’t talking to Theresa right now, but she just considered that a bump in the road, his love for her and their children would bring him around.
She pulled into a back alley by the wharf and slipped out of the SUV. For once Theresa was thankful for the cold weather, wearing gloves meant she would leave no fingerprints on the stolen vehicle and no one would ever know the horrible thing she had just done. “I didn’t mean to hurt her,” she whispered, “I just don’t want to lose my daughter.” Softly crying, Theresa stumbled back to her mother’s house, saying a prayer when she found the house empty. She didn’t want Gwen to die and knew someone had to have found Gwen’s wrecked car by now. With any luck the doctors would patch her up good as knew and nobody would even think of coming after Theresa.
The whole day had been a mistake. Theresa had gone to the Crane mansion this morning to see her children and was informed by a very snide Ivy that Gwen was coming back to Harmony to get Jane. Theresa had panicked, giving Ivy the opening that she needed to rub salt into Theresa’s wounds, “I always knew that little girl wasn’t your daughter, she’s much too sweet to come from someone piece of trash like you.” Theresa had attacked Ivy and then ran from the house, it was luck that she found the black SUV two blocks from the Crane mansion. The keys had been left in the ignition and Theresa didn’t even hesitate before climbing in the driver’s seat. There was only one thought in her head, stop Gwen stop Gwen stop Gwen. Theresa didn’t even realize that it was Gwen driving the Mercedes; she wasn’t even aiming for the luxury car but had accidentally run a stop sign.
What was she going to do? Theresa went into her room and laid on the bed hoping that an answer would come to her.

Gwen opened her eyes and almost screamed; even that little movement was too much for her aching head. There was yelling outside the car but she couldn’t make out any of the words, and almost immediately her car door was wrenched open and a man was asking if she was all right. “I think so, but I don’t know what happened. Why does my head hurt,” at that second she saw the damage, “And why is my car wrapped around a tree?” Jared was finally able to breath a little easier. Gwen was out of her car and safe and they were on their way to the hospital so that Eve could give her a thorough examination. He was still laughing about Gwen’s comment, trust a socialite to care more about her luxury car than her own neck. “I’m sorry Gwen, there is no way to save your car, but I did manage to grab your luggage and cds before they towed it away.” Jared was trying to keep the mood light on purpose, he had seen the driver of the SUV and was worried about why Theresa had done this. He knew that Theresa was having a hard time lately, he had divorced her, Ethan wouldn’t talk to her, she was back to living with her mother, she was working at the cannery, and wasn’t even allowed to see her children. Jared felt bad about the whole situation, maybe if he had gotten Tess to leave town none of this would have happened. Then he remembered the mockery that she had made of their marriage and regretted only Gwen’s accident. Gwen looked over at her rescuer and smiled, Jared was the last person she expected to ever help her. She had always found him adorable but at the same time had to question his sanity for hooking up with Theresa. At least she knew that Ethan was just , but Jared always seemed to have an aura of intelligence around him when he wasn’t with his little bride. “So how is married life Jared, did you two ever have a baby?” Gwen couldn’t even bring herself to say that woman’s name. Jared was silent for a minute, thinking how to phrase his words correctly, “Actually, I left that b*tch. She was cheating on me from day one with Ethan, and that was one of her better lies. I finally decided I couldn’t be with a woman who couldn’t be honest with me. I feel sorry for her because I get the feeling that Tess doesn’t even know herself.” Gwen thought about what Jared had said, was it true that Theresa might just be a lost little girl? The love triangle had started when Theresa was so young…Gwen was startled by her thoughts, was she actually feeling sorry for Theresa?

Gwen sat in the cubicle and answered all of Eve’s questions, yes she had been wearing her safety belt, no she didn’t get a look at the driver, no her neck didn’t hurt only her head. It seemed forever before Eve was satisfied that Gwen was unhurt, and even then she seemed reluctant to release Gwen. “Gwen, I know that the DNA test proved you to be Jane’s mother but can’t you spare a thought to how Theresa is feeling right now. After everything else that she has lost, can you really take Jane away from her?”
Gwen stood there for a second, too shocked to even respond. It was Jared parting the little curtain that brought her out of her daze. “How dare you speak her name to me and how dare you ask me to spare her the pain of losing a child. That little b*tch ensured that two of my children never even saw the light of day. Although I guess most of my anger should go to you Eve, what kind of medical school did you attend that you can’t correctly interpret a DNA test the first time it is given. If it wasn’t for your incompetence my daughter wouldn’t have had to spend a day without me.” Gwen stormed from the cubicle and was halfway to the elevators before she realized that she had left her ride with Eve, “I’m sure he’ll figure out that I’ve headed for the car.” Oddly enough Jared’s company made her feel better, surprising since he should have reminded her of Theresa. Gwen walked out to the parking lot with a smile on her face and hope in her heart.
Jared looked at Eve and couldn’t help wanting to spit. “What gives you the right to tell others what to do with their children Eve, aren’t you still looking for your lost child?” Eve’s mouth dropped open and a squeak came out. “Besides Eve, Theresa has no claim on that little girl. After all that Gwen has been through, don’t you think she deserves a little happiness?” Jared left Eve and thought perhaps that his love life wasn’t out for the count. Maybe together with Gwen they could manage to heal the wounds Ethan and Theresa had given them.

Jared found Gwen sitting on the hood of his car, “Where to pretty lady?” smiling as he opened her door. Gwen gave him a little smile before sliding into the passenger seat, “I guess we should go to the mansion. Ethan said he’d have Jane waiting there for me and I’m already about three hours behind schedule, I hope no one was worried.”
“I’m sure that if you asked it pretty enough Gwen, the whole world would stop for you.” Jared couldn’t believe he just said that and started to blush. “Why Mr. Casey, are you hitting on me?” Gwen said with a laugh, it was nice to know that she wasn’t repulsive to every man on the planet. Suddenly she got a thought, “Would you like to have dinner tonight Jared? I’m not sure yet of where I’m staying, but I’m sure they’ll have room service.”
“Like you even needed to ask Gwen, of course. Now lets go get your little girl.” With that he sped out of the parking garage and toward the Crane mansion.
“No Ethan I haven’t seen her. Yes, I’ll call you if I hear anything, goodbye.” Pilar hung up the phone just in time to see Theresa run into the kitchen. “Was he calling about me mama? I knew Ethan couldn’t stay mad at me forever.”
”Mija, that was Ethan but he wasn’t calling about you. Gwen was supposed to meet him about 3 hours ago and she hasn’t shown up yet.”
“That evil witch will never raise my daughter and I made sure that she’ll never be there to meet Ethan,” Not even realizing what she had just said Theresa stood there in triumph, convinced that the world was about to get back on track. It was Pilar’s expression of horror that brought Theresa back to reality. “Umm…I mean that’s too bad, poor Ethan shouldn’t have to wait around just because Gwen can’t be on time. Maybe I should go up there and keep him company.”
“Theresa, what have you done to Gwen?” Pilar was worried that Theresa had finally crossed into insanity. “I didn’t do anything mama, I just wish someone could stop her from taking my daughter away. Haven’t I suffered enough by being kept away from my own son?” That was a point that still angered Theresa, why had Ethan refused to let her see the children? Just because she lied to him about LE didn’t give the judge the right to take away her children. “Theresa, you lost your son because of your greed, and you lost Jane because she isn’t your daughter. If you want to have any kind of future with your son and Ethan you need to stop scheming, stop lying, and show your love through positive actions. I know that my sweet daughter is still in there somewhere. Let her out and you will find your life becomes easier.” Pilar left the kitchen and said a silent prayer for her daughter. Theresa had lost so much, more than any of Pilar’s other children, and she needed to do something before any chance for regaining that happiness vanished.
Theresa sat and thought about what her mother had said. Was she really to blame for her life blowing up? No, everything she did was for love, that couldn’t be bad. But then she remembered that she might have killed Gwen. “God, please let her be ok, I for once did not mean to hurt her, it was an accident.” Even after saying that she wasn’t sure that he heard her. It seemed like nobody ever listened to her anymore. Maybe she had told too many lies over the years, but how could she change overnight?

The butterflies in Gwen’s stomach were on overtime as she walked through the front door of the Crane mansion. ‘Its funny that I can ask a man out to dinner with ease, but I am nervous about being reunited with my daughter.’ It was because she had experienced one too many disappointments where her children were concerned that she was afraid this wasn’t real. Gwen softly laughed at herself, earlier she thought the accident had been another of Theresa’s schemes but after leaving the hospital she realized just how crazy that sounded. It was probably just some reckless high school kid, but it made her mad that she immediately thought it was Theresa. She was trying to forgive the girl and didn’t need constant reminder of their past dealings. “Are you ok Gwen?” She had stopped so suddenly that Jared almost ran into her back. “Sorry Jared, I was just thinking about the past.” “Its alright Gwen, Theresa always used to daydream about Ethan too. I’d like to think that at some point she loved me. You were married to him Gwen, what’s so great about Ethan?” This was the question that haunted Jared’s dreams, the question that was actually causing him to fear parts of life. Gwen sat silent for a second, “Is there really anything great about Ethan,’ Gwen didn’t really have an answer. She turned to Jared and answered anyway, “There really isn’t anything great about Ethan. I think he actually inspires insanity.” Jared chuckled before asking, “If he’s such an ass why did you stay together for so long? And even I know the crazy extremes you went through to keep him.” “Like I said Jared, he made me insane. I had known Ethan for so long, we’d been a couple practically from the cradle. When Theresa came onto the scene I wasn’t worried, after all what was so appealing about the housekeeper’s daughter? I still think she’s way too young for him, but maybe he needs a little girl to play with to make him feel happy.” Seeing the pained look on Jared’s face Gwen had to laugh, “Sorry Jared, I forgot you married that little girl. Speaking of which, what in the world did you see in her?” “I saw a woman who was full of life, a woman who needed to learn what love really was. Unfortunately I think her time with Alistair warped her mind a little. All she could think of was Ethan and felt any action that brought her close to him was worth it. After a few months I felt like I didn’t even know her. I don’t love her anymore Gwen, but I do want the best for her. I’ve been meaning to talk to Pilar about getting Theresa in to see a psychiatrist but keep forgetting.” Jared sighed, why couldn’t Gwen have been single when he moved to Harmony? Gwen didn’t have time to respond as LE rushed up to her, “Aunt Gwen, we’ve been waiting for you! Are you ok? Auntie Rebecca made Dad call you about 500 times today…” Whatever else the little boy had been about to say was cut off as Rebecca came running down the stairs, somehow managing to spill her entire martini on Jared in the process, “Gwennie, I was so scared, where have you been?” Gwen actually felt moved by her mother’s obvious concern, Rebecca might not be the best mother but at least she consistently loved Gwen, “I’ve had several martinis to try and calm down after that nasty Sam Bennett wouldn’t send out a brigade to look for you. What happened?” Gwen sighed, typical Rebecca, “Its alright mother, I got into a minor car accident. Luckily Jared was there and he drove me to the hospital. On the bright side you can come new car shopping with me tomorrow. Now back to what is important, where’s my little girl?” Ethan came walking into the foyer at that exact moment, “Here she is Gwen, I just got done feeding her so be on throw up watch.” Gwen held out her arms for Jane and the little girl almost launched herself at her mother. Holding her precious daughter made the events of the day fade away. Theresa had been hiding in the bushes as Jared’s car dove up and she almost died of relief when Gwen climbed out. ‘She’s not dead so I can’t be charged with murder, but she’s still going to take my baby away.’ She backed away from the mansion, her mind going a mile a minute. There had to be some way to get her family back together again, some way to get Ethan to forgive her. With that thought Theresa started walking towards the Russell’s’, Whitney would help her come up with something, besides which Whitney needed to stop thinking about her failed marriage and cheating husband. Maybe Whitney would treat them both to sundaes at the book café. Ever since being forced out at Crane, Theresa had avoided the cannery job that Pilar had forced on her; as such she wasn’t really able to afford anything. Those lawyers didn’t even let her have a car to leave the mansion; Pilar had had to pick Theresa up in the family’s old station wagon. Before she knew it Theresa was at the home of her best friend. She didn’t even bother knocking on the front door but walked up the stairs to Whitney’s bedroom. Several voices grew louder as Theresa approached Whitney’s bedroom, “I won’t leave Whitney, you and our children belong with me,” Theresa couldn’t quite make out what Whitney said but she couldn’t miss what Chad yelled next, “I’m not gay, and if you ever call me that again I’ll give you something to complain about b*tch!” Theresa heard enough. She kicked the door in and saw Chad waving his fist at Whitney, without thinking she grabbed the scissors off of Whitney’s bedside stand and plunged them into Chad’s back. He froze and then fell to the floor, jamming the scissors even farther into his body. Whitney started screaming while Theresa could do nothing but stare at Chad’s now still body. This was the scene that greeted Eve when she came home from work, “What happened here girls, what have you done to Chad?” “I’m sorry Dr. Russell, he was about to attack Whitney and I just wanted to stop him, is he ok?” Eve knelt down and checked her son-in-law’s wrist for a pulse, and found nothing. “Whitney, sit down and stop screaming. Chad is dead, I’m so sorry girls but I have to call Sam.” She was surprised the words came out so evenly and sat down next to her sobbing daughter. Eve held her daughter for a few moments before moving, “I’m sorry Theresa, but I have to report this to Sam. Don’t worry, the police will call it the accident that it was.” Eve pulled the cell phone out of her pocket and dialed Sam’s number, “Hello Sam, its Eve. I’m not doing so great, there has been an accident at my house could you please come over right now. Thanks.”
